College of Electors

The College of Electors are the body that elects the duke (or duchess) who rules the city of Toresta.

The actual power of the college is wider. The college elects the magistrates of the Council of Ten. The college also acts as advisors of the Duke. Most laws originate in the College and are then forwarded to the Duke for consideration, before they become law.

Structure

The College is made up of representatives of the original Funding Families. How each family selects their representative in the College is determined by that family. Some elect the Elector. In others the position is filled by the family patron or matron. In others it is passed down through a specific family line. Only family members listed in the Sapphire Journal are eligible to occupy a seat in the College.

Because the original Founding Families were all either Human,, Gnome or halflings only members of those races are in the College.

History

The college was formally founded upon the death of Mayor Dovyda Adomaitis. The family matrons and patriarchs decided that their independent city need a leader of more expansive authority and established that a duke should lead the growing town. It was decided that one member of each family was represent that families interest in a College of Electors who would elect the Duke for a life tenure.

It was not until 473 ATC that it was determined that only families listed in the Sapphire Journal would have a seat in the College or be eligible to be raised to duke.
