Whispers of Sasava Cave
“You may see this cave as a shelter, but beware as you make your way from chamber to chamber. To delve too deep will be to become the next meal of the vast creature awaiting below…”
- Notes to a Winters Traveller, by Leopold Der Vitner.
Overview
Those venturing into this seemingly vast extending cave report a shushing and whispering sound echoing up from the depths, which in turn has led to the legends surrounding Sasava. The legends about the whispers heard here stem from the presence of the rarely seen giant creature living there. It is an example of what is believed to be an ancient species of molluscs, known as Garoudr, originating from centuries prior to the Time of the Tome. There are only a few known to exist across the world, one of which is in the Uvonid Crescent Mountains of Tordronnen. Over centuries they have grown to such extremes of size that the opening of their shells is frequently mistaken as the entrance to an extended cave system.
Reported Biology
The cavernous shell of the Garoudr comprises of a concentric spiral of chambers, each slightly smaller than the last. The main body of the Garoudr inhabits the most central chambers of the shell, venturing out little by little when in search of food. It has long tentacles which the sightless creature uses to feel it’s way through each chamber in turn. The scavenging tentacles will sweep across the space, gathering and pulling back anything they find which might be considered foods.
The walls of the outer chambers appear very much like normal rock, with very little to discern it from any other cave. Progressing further into the spiral the walls become smooth and shimmer with a pearl like substance which cannot be climbed and is resistant to most forms of damage. The odor of decay and a saltiness akin to the ocean also increases with the proximity to the Garoudr.
