Wasurè Mimics

"One might assume that death at the teeth of a mimic would be the worst thing one could endure in death... but in the dire grip of the Wasurè Mimic whose pocketses transcend our own dimension. A fate much worse than simply death awaits..."

- Monsters and Myths of Tordronnen, by Leopold Der Vitner

Overview

Wasurè Mimics, also known as Oubliette Mimics, are a subspecies of Mimic which can be found across much of Imerathan, however they are particularly common in Tordronnen. Like other Mimics they specialise in shapeshifting to avoid detection, lying in wait for unsuspecting prey to happen across them. Once discovered they have a vicious bite with their mouth being by far the largest part of their body, teeth laced with a paralytic agent, and a sticky prehensile tongue that will entrap anything it touches.

This method of trap hunting is common to all types of Mimics, but what makes Wasurè Mimics unique is their digestion method. Once a being is consumed the stomach of the Mimic acts as a pocket dimension from which they can slowly sap the nutrients from the entrapped. They harness the time slowing capabilities of the pocket dimension to slow any sort of decay and make the source of their nourishment last as long as possible. This allows them to go for exceptional lengths of time between meals, sometimes years at a time.

However, the use of the pocket dimension has a terrifying side effect which gives the Wasurè Mimics their name. Should a person become entrapped in this pocket dimension at the time of their death, their Soul remains within the Mimic. Unable to pass on through the hands of Thallo, nor see judgement before Meridon, they then cannot move onto their next reincarnated life.

Anatomy and Morphology

While in hiding the Wasurè Mimic will look exactly like the item they are shapeshifted into, however the overall size of the original mimic is generally similar to whatever item they are hiding as. Once they are attacking their intended target they will reveal a wide mouth with concentric rings of teeth. The jaw is able to dislocate fully allowing the near complete engulfing of beings as near whole as possible. This excess range of jaw movement is unique to the Wasurè Mimics due to often consuming creatures whole and preferably while still alive. The tongue is prehensile and typically 3-4 times larger than the body of the mimic itself. During the process of swallowing the target is passed into a pocket dimension contained within the body of the mimic itself.

Perception and Sensory Capabilites

Wasurè Mimics have the ability to manifest their multiple eyes in any location of their body, giving them a potentially fully circular range of vision. They have a poor sense of hearing and so rely on their range of vision and low level tremor sense to detect nearby prey.

Habitat

Mimics of this type seem to be able to thrive in nearly any type of environment with no seeming difficulty in adapting to extremes of temperature or weather exposure.

Reproduction and Growth

Due to their solitary nature the reproduction of Wasurè Mimics is a rare occurrence. They are a hermaphroditic species and so after pairing, they will separate and both Mimics will eventually lay a clutch of eggs of typically 3-7 in size. Once laid in what the Mimic considers a safe place to nest, the eggs will then be abandoned to their own devices.

The newly hatched Mimics are essentially fully formed smaller versions of their parents and the first to hatch from a clutch of eggs will often feed on its siblings as they later hatch. The sustenance from these first meals will allow the firstborn Wasurè Mimic to grow and find its own territory to inhabit.

Wasurè Mimics growth is commensurate with the frequency of their nutritional intake. Those found in isolated regions will take up to 10 years to reach a size able to be of risk to an average sized humanoid. However those in urban settings or with a regular supply of prey have been recorded to grow large enough to consume a horse whole.

Dietary Habits

The beings consumed by the Wasurè Mimic find themselves trapped in a pocket dimension. The few that have ever been rescued from this fate before dying, describe an endless open plane with no clear landmarks or horizon, where they lose all sense of time and report a slowly increasing sense of fatigue.

By using the pocket dimension to hold their prey, the Mimic is able to slowly sap the nutrients from them over a significantly extended length of time. This is in part why they will always attempt to consume their prey whole, to keep them alive in the pocket space for as long as possible.

Domestication, Uses and Byproducts

Wasurè Mimics are not considered to be domesticated in so far as they will consider any available being as their next meal. Any attempts to keep Wasurè Mimics in captivity must be managed with great care.

The most extreme form of punishment in all of Tordronnen is to be fed to a Wasurè Mimic. Only the most heinous of crimes are met with this sentence as it robs the individual of freedom even in death. There are Wasurè Mimics kept in the dungeons of the Castle of Justice in Verodeen said to reach upwards of 15m in height.

The teeth of the Wasurè Mimics can be used in alchemy as they have a potent paralytic effect, however the harvesting of such items could be considered something of an extreme sport.
