The core function of the Halaenia Infirmary is to provide care and healing to any and all in need, irrelevant of station or wealth. This ethos is reflected in the individuals working within the Infirmary and the duty to offer care, help and support to the people around them is considered paramount in their day to day activities. People working within the Infirmary are often offered great respect for their efforts in caring for others.

Initially the Infirmary began as a typical hospital but with care only for those who could afford it, however in 1012 there was a significant increase of funding made to the hospital. This was done with the intention of setting up the charitable aspect of the Halaenia Infirmary to be able to offer medical care and treatment to all who enter the building regardless of their ability to pay. All people of Osthaven know that if they have any sort of injury or ailment they will be able to find aid there.

With it being a charitable organisation, those that are able to pay fully or even just part of their care do so, and any further donations are always welcome. It is not unusual for celebrations or events in the city will offer the opportunity to donate to the continuation of the work done at Halaenia Infirmary.

The main Infirmary building has 15 wards for inpatient care, in house accommodation available for staff, smaller treatment facilities, an alchemy lab and a moderately sized greenhouse for the growing of specific types of herbs.

Prior to the current building of the Halaenia Infirmary there was a small temple dedicated to Halaenia, the Goddess of Healing and Midwifery. Parts of the original temple building are still identifiable tucked into the building as it stands now. The Temple was first recorded as being present on the island in 722 ToT, however it is unclear whether it was solely for the worship of Halaenia at that time or more of the gods.

By 802 ToT it was noted that the temple was also becoming a common building of sanctuary for those in need of aid and, due to the tenets of those serving Halaenia, any who came for healing were cared for. The temple at this time was by no means large and had started acquiring the use of surrounding buildings to try and house the sick and in the late 940's it was decided that a purpose built hospital was needed. The growing populace and through traffic of the city of Osthaven meant that a truly dedicated site of care would be necessary to keep up with the needs of the public.

The formal Halaenia Infirmary site as it is now opened in 964 with some small expansions taking place over the next 15 years.

Finally the creation of the Halaenia Infirmary Charitable Board took place in 1012 to oversee the gathering and use of charitable funds.
