The Dawn of Meridon

The Dawn of Meridon is the legend of how the third and final member of the Triarchy of the Gods came into being, and in doing so ended that ongoing war between their fellow Triarchy members.

Summary

In the time before Meridon, there were the two great gods, Othero of the Day and Kalani of the Night, and their 12 lesser gods. There was immense discord and enmity between Othero and Kalani which eventually devolved into war. The 12 lesser gods each choosing sides and great armies being raised in order to battle each other. Although mortal life was in existence in the world it was often at the mercy of the great beings battling above and around them, many facing extinction in the wake of the gods wrath for each other.

As the animosity between the two sides grew and the ability for life on Uthara to survive dwindled it became clear that something needed to be done to force an end to this conflict. It was at this time that the Ancient Spirits manifested in their full force on the Material Plane for the last time. They gathered and spent the last of their strength to birth a new god, one with power to rival both Kalani and Othero, even combined. In a climactic moment, in which the moon and sun were pulled to share the skies together, Meridon was born. Meridon of the Dawn and Dusk.

In the creation of Meridon the power over all matters of balance became theirs. Othero may radiate the power of the sun, and Kalani will the cycles of the moon, but it was Meridon who would now dictate their time in the skies, even the turn of the seasons. Ensuring all things would be done in fairness and balance over the course of time.

In turn four of the lesser gods left the rule of Kalani and Othero, their domains being more suited to this new god of Fate, Order and Balance.

Historical Basis

The truth of this story is considered absolute in its telling. Primarily as it has been told to the most fortunate (or unfortunate in some cases) of mortals blessed with speaking to the gods themselves.

Spread

There is a form of this myth in all civilizations of Uthara. Although the names and some of the minor events vary, the tale of god at war and that war being ended by a greater deity of peace remains consistent.

In Art

There are numerous depictions of the eclipse at the moment of Meridon's birth both in paintings and sculptures. Many of these are housed in galleries and museums around the country but most of the painted depictions can be found in Skonyre. Also of note is a beautiful carved fountain in the central square of Morkine.
