Taboos

After the doom, there were none to enforce the old laws, and, most laws except the most important ones were forgotten. Instead, those who resurfaced, had agreed on the Taboos - rules of the greatest importance to follow. Many did not wish to repeat tragedies of the doom, and did not have a want for the violence of old. So the taboos were implemented as the highest law, one above the individual, a community or a kingdom.

There were 4 kinds of Taboos:

Taboos for the Foolish, Taboos for the Selfish, Taboos for the Evil and Taboos for the arrogant.

  • Taboos for the Foolish are rules meant for ones survival - they are rules that one should follow if they do not wish to suffer death, injury or disease, and they do not come with a punishment except for the lack of help from others;
  • Taboos for the Selfish are rules meant to help one be a part of humanity - they are rules that encourage cooperation and understanding between people, and as punishment warrent the shunning of those who do not follow them.
  • Taboos for the Evil are rules that restrict what one is allowed to do - they are rules that seperate the good from evil, and any who break these taboos may be considered villains, and face exile.
  • Taboos for the arrogant are taboos that exist to prevent the repeat of the doom - mostly forgotten by the common people, the taboos for the arrogant are rules that aim to avoid the mistakes of their ancestors, and to prevent another doom. The punishment for such a crime is immediate execution.

Later, the taboos served as a base for the major rules of the Empire.

History

The taboos originate from the Tunnel lands and the expeditions originating from them. Later, during the unification, the Temple of Hey Eye integrated the taboos within their own teachings, and the taboos were formulated as the basis for the major rules. Along with this origin, the taboos serve as one justification for Perduins rule - as the rightful leader of the Empire, it is their duty to enforce that the taboos are observed - as well as often being the reson of their deposal.

Execution

Taboos form the core values within the Uran enclave. As such, it is often expected for people to speak up when someone challanges the taboos and for frontier justice to be dealt if outside the reach of settlements. That said, many for one reason or another will break the taboos and will live as outlaws, creating their own communities. These rarely last long, as their casual disregard for taboos leads to conflict with any settlement that follows them, leading to destruction.

Components and tools

It is a classic choice for central monuments in graveyards to feature the chiseled inscriptions of the taboos as a reminder to those alive - observing of the taboos leads to a better life.
