Death
You may be looking for creatures sometimes referred to as Deaths, the Psychopomps.
Death is the cessation of life on the material plane. Death is the fate of most mortal creatures, after which psychopomps guide their souls to an afterlife that fits them, in accordance with the Pact Primeval. Death can generally only be thwarted with powerful magic or with divine intervention. The fate of non-sophonts is controversial, but it is generally believed that they are either reincarnated, or simply cease to be. Some creatures, like Dragons and Elves are bound to the material plane, and are simply reborn on Tol-Lorak once again. This is also the fate of the followers of some religions, particularly Druidism and Oteri.
It is the belief of most faiths that Death was the invention of the Leviathans, designed to draw souls into the Abyss and so to tear a hole into their prison, that they might escape back into the Secure Planes. This eventually lead to Kol's sacrifice, and the Gods scrambled to find a stopgap measure to protect themselves and to rescue Kol. In the end, the attempts of Asmodeus and his armies failed to reach the bottom of the Abyss. And so a deal was struck-the Pact Primeval. Asmodeus would secure the entrance to the Abyss and keep any demons from escaping. In the meantime, the other Gods would gather their strength in order to set forth on one final, apocalyptic, harrowing of hell.
The pact lead to the creation of the Society for the Safeguarding and Sanctification of Sacred Sophont Souls (SSSSSS)-the organization which leads the Pschopomps. In the absence of a more permanent solution, souls would be lead to secure planes that fit their own nature as revealed in life. There, souls would be pushed to come more and more inline with their own nature, that one day they might be ready to participate in the Second Harrowing of Hell.
