Centaur
Basic Information
Anatomy
Centaurs are a type of beastfolk most closely related to cervitaurs, but without other close relations. Their nearly-unique six-limbed body form makes true classification difficult for those wizards interested in the subject. They are composed of an essentially humanoid torso most similar in appearance to a faun or a human and a lower body which is made of the entirety of a horse-like body, absent its neck. Their spine adopts a particularly bizarre shape as a consequence, with a dramatic curve where the back meets the horse-body. This curve is heftily reinforced both by its own structure, and by a powerful network of muscles which prevent the back from being injured by the motion of the lower body-and helpfully double as reinforcement from impact, allowing Centaurs to wear armor and use lances, if they so desire.
Genetics and Reproduction
Centaurs, like all known mammals, reproduce sexually and give birth to live young. Pregnancy lasts approximately 12 months. Unlike horses and like humans, their reproductive cycle is year-long, with roughly month-long menses.
Growth Rate & Stages
Young centaurs combine the features of horses and humans in odd ways. Young centaurs are born being able to run (if unsteadily at first) and able to hold up their heads. Neural development, however, takes longer, and centaurs begin to reach mental and sexual maturity at a similar age as humans do.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Centaurs are obligate omnivores. Centaurs need to eat both plant matter, such as grass or hay, and animal matter, in the form of milk and meat.
Additional Information
Facial characteristics
Centaurs look similar to humans, and more similar to fawns. In contrast, their eyes tend to be slightly wider and further apart, their faces as a whole tend to be wider, and their ears are long and pointed and moveable, like those of a horse. Some centaurs can grow facial hair, but it is not common to have the ability or cultural inclination to do so.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Centaurs are most common on the lower Bolari plain, although they can be found in small kin groups or as adventurers throughout Arstol.
Average Intelligence
Centaurs tend to have intelligence comparable to humans or other humanoids.
Lifespan
65 years
Average Height
9'-12'
Average Weight
1400-1800 lbs
Average Length
7-9 ft.
Average Physique
Centaurs, particularly those in tribal groups, tend to be very strong and muscular, although their are certainly exceptions.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Centaur skin color can vary wildly. It is suspected that either interbreeding with or magical alterations from humans occurred at some point, giving rise to this phenomena.
