The crew of the USS Enterprise discover the remains of an unknown alien species on a desolate, distant world. Dr. Leonard McCoy and Lt. Commander Spock confirmed the species was not among any known species in the Starfleet databanks.
With the unknown alien were six rings of highly advanced technology based on energy-matter conversion much like replicators or transporter technology. The rings were well beyond Starfleet technology.
