Lich
Some people consider becoming a lich to the pinnacle of magical achievement, however most see it as the ultimate affront to everything that is good and pure in the world. A lich is effectively immortal, they do not require food, drink or sleep, and they will never succumb to old age or frailty. The only thing that they require for sustenance is a constant supply of souls with with which to feed their phylacteries. The only thing a lich values is their phylactery, it is their source of undeath and their only weakness. A lich's phylactery is always incredibly well guarded, and very hard to find.
A lich is a master of undeath, and as such they will seldom be found without their own armies of lesser undead and other creatures bound to servitude. Owing to the amount of skill and magical power required to become a lich, they are incredibly powerful spellcasters. Many liches are wizards by vocation, but it is not unknown for sorcerers to attempt the ritual as well. The ritual to become a lich is a closely guarded secret, buried in old tomes of forbidden magic located in the bowels of the royal university library or in ancient scrolls in long forgotten dungeons. The exact details of the ritual are disputed, but the one common thread is that it requires some kind of heinous sacrifice.
