The Harpers

"The world needs heroes, yes. But it also needs people like us."
  • Vivion Calarel
  • The Harpers are a top-secret organisation founded in the last days of the Second Arcane War with one goal: To delay, interfere with, and otherwise impede those who would see the entirety of Tilendrel destroyed until they can be noticed by others and stopped for good. The organisation's scale is unknown even to its leaders, but it has operatives everywhere from the highest echelons of Litherian royalty to the most minor tribes on Moradin Island, and not one of them has yet been found out.   Recently, amidst the worries of arcanists and government officials that the third of the Gems has been found, the Harpers have stepped up the scale of their operations and begun to recruit yet more operatives in the hopes of finding it before less scrupulous parties do.   The Harpers are strong and single-minded, willing to do whatever it takes to prevent objects or people of great power from falling into the wrong hands. With a few notable exceptions, they never store such objects within their organisation or knowledge, leaving it to the governments of Tilendrel to recognise and contain the power within them.   Ranking System   While they have no pyramidical structure or ranks, Harpers are given codenames that describe both their specialities and their assignments, as follows:   The first half of the name denotes their current assignment, categorised into several broad groups:
    • Archer - Surveillance or supervision of a potentially dangerous or disruptive individual.
    • Crossbowman - Surveillance or supervision of a large group, such as a ministry of government or an influential tribe.
    • Ranger - Surveillance or supervision of an object of great power or significance not currently in any danger.
    • Pikeman - Protection of a valuable, powerful, or influential individual.
    • Longswordsman - Protection of an object of great power or significance at risk.
    • Shaman - Study of an object of great power.
    • Crownsbane - Assassination or abduction of a potentially dangerous or disruptive individual.
    • Crownsblessing - Retrieval or rescue of an object or individual.
    • Owlbearer - Protection of an object of great power currently within the agent's possession.
    • High Harper - Supervision and management of one or more of the above.
The second describes the agent's speciality and often their preferred method of completing an assignment.
    • Quend - Investigation and tracking.
    • Minan - Divine magic.
    • Renthen - Combat or battlefield strategy.
    • Henrin - Stealth and infiltration.
    • Yith'n - Assassination and deception.
    • Irgon - Destabilisation and leadership.
    • Joth - Arcane magic.
      Notable Members
    • Vivion Calarel (Archer Quend), Everian elf charged with tailing Warryn Sedoru and confirming whether or not he is currently in possession of the third Gem.
    • Fienn Lentor (High Harper Irgon), a human raised by bandits in the Unclaimed Eastern Desert, currently in charge of the majority of Harper operations in the Eastern Nations.
    • Eve Brieland (Owlbearer Irgon). While not a full member of the Harpers, the Head Baron of Everflame has connections with some of their agents, and has been granted honorary membership for her shrewd handling of the Ruby throughout the Second Arcane War.
    • Lord Dennax Thul (Crossbowman Yith'n), one of the most influential nobles of Litheria, as well as famously one of the least honourable. Despite this reputation however, Lord Thul wants to see Tilendrel in danger as little as any other Harper, and has been known to pass up opportunities to increase his standing in favour of moving closer to his assigned objective.
