Moradin Island

Moradin Island is the largest island in Tilendrel, located off the east coast of Tilen. While it has a government of its own, the island was placed under the 'protection' of the Baronies of Everflame during the Second Arcane War, and Everian forces have not yet withdrawn from the island. Its main inhabitants are its natives as well as a number of arcanists seeking both isolation and an arcane mystery to study. It is notable for three main reasons: its inhabitants were the first to expose the horrors of the Darhemian Empire, it was the site of a major battle during the Second Arcane War, and, more recently, its inhabitants have been developing unusual magic powers they call 'Psion'ics', literally 'magic of the mind'.   Their homes are small, often built of stone or clay, and their communities are close-knit. Due to its material insignificance as well as the recent fallout of the Second Arcane War, the island is largely ignored by Tilen's governments, though certain parties seek to use the natives' powers for their own ends.   History   Little is known of the island's history prior to 2000 ANG, since its inhabitants keep few historical records, and those that do exist make no mention of the passage of time, making their events impossible to pinpoint. What is known, however, is that the island was under Darhemian control for at least 1000 years prior to its discovery by the western powers.   When the Darhemian Empire revealed itself to the rest of the world in 2135 ANG, a few brave inhabitants of Moradin Island saw an opportunity to escape their oppression. Braving the perilous journey over sea to Gildmire, they told the truth of how the Darhemian Empire achieved such peace and efficiency, galvanising the nations of Tilen to war. The island itself was liberated in the waning days of the war, in Newdawn of 2137 ANG. Establishing a democratic government, the inhabitants of the island hoped to join their new allies in rebuilding the remains of the Darhemian Empire.   Just before the Second Arcane War, the Litherian Empire established a secret research outpost on the island, hoping to advance runecraft without foreign interference. Thanks to Tarvus Lin'gell, a legendary Everian spymaster, the Baronies of Everflame discovered this base, launching a surprise attack on the 19th of Horizon 2640. The strike team underestimated the outpost's defences, however, and became mired in a siege that was only broken five months later, when one of the team, disguised as a captured scientist, infiltrated the base and sabotaged their defences as well as setting a number of explosive traps within the library, destroying the base from the inside out.   While the exact time it began is unknown, the first recorded use of Psion'ics took place in Glowsend of 2642 ANG, sparking a renewed interest in the island and its inhabitants, though they have made it clear that, while they will allow their powers to be studied, they will not partake in another continental war.
