Magic Laws in Tilendrel

"My experiments, illegal? Well, maybe just a tad..."
  • Yill Nivin, controversial arcanist.
  • Due to its capability for both creation and destruction, the use of magic is widely regulated throughout Tilendrel, though differently so in different countries. Below is a list of magical laws in the various nations of Tilendrel.   The Sovereign Baronies of Everflame
    • Magewrighting, the sale of spellcasting in exchange for material wealth, is unilaterally banned.
    • All normal crimes involving violence, theft, destruction of property, or fraud also apply to those committed using magic.
    • Use of enchantment spells to make someone act against their will is prohibited. This does not apply when such spells are used in self-defence or to prevent violence or other crime.
    • Certain magical items, generally those capable of significant destruction, are banned.
    • Creating a planar portal or summoning creatures from another plane is banned without government permission.
    • Beings under another's thrall, undead or otherwise, are not considered responsible for their actions.
    • Necromancy is strictly regulated, but allowed if the undead are used only for manual labour or a similar purpose.
    • Freedom of religion is strictly enforced, and certain exceptions to the above rules are made within temples of the gods.
      Southern/Eastern Elves
    • Enchantment magic is not banned, largely because elves are immune to it.
    • Magic that upsets the balance of nature is disallowed, as well as opening portals to certain planes of existence.
    • Normal crimes committed using magic are treated as usual.
    • Magewrighting is banned, though this law is often ignored in Tae Dendei and even sometimes in Esidell.
      Ironheart Kingdom
    • Forging of magical artefacts must be registered with the Royal Arcanists' Guild.
    • Use of enchantment magic to make someone act against their will is not illegal, but the Royal Guard often looks the other way if its users meet with a sticky end.
    • Creating false gemstones or valuable materials using illusion spells is punishable by prison time.
    • Normal crimes committed using magic are treated as usual.
      Litherian Empire
    • Use of arcane magic without government permission is considered heretical, and punishable by death.
    • Warlock magic is unilaterally banned, and even warlocks who refrain from casting spells are often burnt at the stake.
    • Divine magic used to commit crimes is theoretically illegal, though if the perpetrator is a major priest the crime is often ignored.
    • There are no restrictions upon the use of divine magic within temples.
    • Atheistic clerics and paladins are prohibited from using magic under threat of prison time, interrogation, or death.
      Gildmire
    • Enchantment magic is unilaterally banned, to avoid large-scale fraud or damage to the banking system.
    • Use of powerful magic in Underven is illegal, since it is believed to anger the spirits.
    • Normal crimes committed using magic are treated as usual.
    • Killing of magical creatures without government permission is illegal, though sometimes overlooked if in self-defence.
      Bentrelhold
    • Normal crimes committed using magic are treated as usual.
    • Goods made or partially made using magic must be clearly marked as such.
    • Business owners have the right to create antimagic fields in their businesses, and scrolls of dispel magic are available cheaply from the government.
      Krin'garr
    • Like many things in Krin'garr, there are no laws on magic. It is, however considered dishonourable to use magic in single combat, and sometimes also in warfare.
      Duerga
    • All magic that could be considered 'evil' (necromancy, inflict wounds, enchantment spells other than calm emotions, etc.) is banned. Some exceptions are made for non-Duergar.
    • Normal crimes committed using magic are treated as usual.
      The Empire of Hin-Sung
    • Almost all magic is allowed, and freedom of thought and religion are strictly enforced. The only exceptions are spells which might limit a person's quest for spiritual perfection, such as feeblemind.

I think I'll need an article like this for my world(s) too. So much information about your different cultures only by exploring how they try to regulate the use of magic!
