Climates of Tilendrel
"Rather a frosty reception, if I do say so myself."Like many other worlds, Tilendrel is a spherical planet on the Material Plane approximately equal in size, gravity, and rotational periods to Earth. Unlike Earth, however, it is mostly water, with Tilen itself contained almost entirely in the northern hemisphere. Note: Cardinal Directions Most maps of Tilendrel are drawn at a 90° angle, showing the Arctic Circle in the west and Moradin Island in the east. While geographers still use the academically correct terms, most of the people of Tilendrel (as well as this article) have adopted the system of 'cartographical directions': west as north, east as south, north as east, and south as west. The Arctic Circle The Ironheart Kingdom, as well as eastern parts of Gildmire, the Southern Elves, and Forge's Eye, are within Tilendrel's arctic circle, with snowy climates reaching temperatures as low as -30°C in winter. To compensate for this, Ironheart cities are normally built in or near mountains for insulation. These temperatures sometimes attract water and ice elementals from the Elemental Plane of Water, which have become a consistent nuisance for the Westernmost Ironheart settlements. After a brief period between Chillstrint and Underven of 936 ANG known as 'De Koldeban' (literally 'the blizzard'), in which a number of small dwarven settlements were destroyed by these attacks, the King ordered that all settlements within 50 miles of the coast have either an evocation wizard or a cleric of Minara in residence to stave off any elemental invasion. Since then, only 13 settlements have been destroyed, only one of which had a cleric or wizard present during the incident. Temperate Climates Most of Tilendrel, from Litheria to western Hin-Sung, is considered temperate, with temperature ranges normally between -6 and 25°C. This includes almost all of Everflame, with the exceptions of western Forge's Eye and eastern Southsea. Riviera, in particular, garners most of its appeal from its tropical but not uncomfortable climate. On average, the north of this temperate area, including Gildmire and Duerga, tends to be hotter thanks to a combination of westerly winds and the heat-trapping gases of the swamps. This also leads to some unusual weather in eastern Gildmire during winter, as it maintains summer temperatures throughout Chillstrint thanks to the heat trapping, before rapid decline towards Finalset and Underven as the gases mysteriously disperse and the desert winds cool down. The reason for this dispersal is still unknown, though most of Gildmire's residents maintain that it is caused by the return of the vengeful spirits of their ancestors. Equatorial Regions The Great Eastern Desert, as well as most of the old Darhemian Empire, is centred around the equator, creating fairly consistent, if inhospitable, weather in the region. For unknown reasons, however, Esidell seems to resist this trend, and has even been known to see snow on some occasions. Due to its history as a Darhemian settlement, some suspect that a technological force from its heyday may still be at work, regulating the city's temperature. Due to its sparse population, the east does not tend to have significant problems with attracted elementals, though it is rumoured that a powerful fire elemental is one of the reasons behind the lack of civilisation in the south. Moradin Island and Other Non-Tilen Areas Moradin Island, alongside a few smaller archipelagos, is the only known land in Tilendrel's southern hemisphere. As such, its seasons are reversed, and its climate is considered tropical, though colder temperatures are not unheard of. The other islands are a similar story, though most of them are too small and barren to be of any interest to the larger nations.Last words of Fyren Bellboot, famous Everian jester, before being executed for insulting the Ironheart King.
