Living Scrolls

Living Scrolls is a Magic Operated Battle Arena (MOBA) game usually played by one to ten players in which the player, referred to as a conjurer, controls a small illusion, referred to as a "Hero", each hero is unique in both looks and style of play. The game objective(s) vary widely depending on the format of play, the three most common format are as following:
  • Dungeon, a cooperative or solo format where the players are fighting creatures, collecting treasures and completing puzzles with the goal of earning experience and items to then defeat the "Dungeon Boss".
  • Domination, a player-versus-player format where teams of five players are trying to take control of objective flags to gain points toward a victory.
  • Conquest, a strategic wargame for two players where they are trying to accumulate ressources and gathering troops to defeat their opponent.
  • Each type of play is extremely popular and can be played in most gathering places.   The common Living Scrolls table, referred to as a Board, is enchanted so that it can hold and display up to eleven Illusion Beads on a large scroll, referred to as a Map, which is set on the middle of the Board, around the Map ten smaller scrolls can be found inscribed with runes of control, a player setting their hand atop the scroll gain the control over their Hero. Players are commonly tasked to bring their own Illusion Beads of Heroes while the Board owner is tasked with bringing in a Illusion Bead of Scenarios which simulates the visual elements of the terrain and other format addition.   Official Illusion Beads can be found and purchased in most general stores, these are usually crafted by the closest Protector's Academy mages and are regulated by the Loremaster's Association, this is speculated to be the biggest source of profit for the association, for this reason they created the department of Architects which consist of artists, toymakers, enchanters and mages tasked with creating new Heroes and Scenarios. The official heroes despite their name represent important powerful beings regardless of their living or dead counterpart morality.

    Homebrew

The immense popularity of Living Scrolls brought in a secondary market of unofficial of Heroes, Formats and Scenarios, those became called "homebrew" as they were popularized by large inns and taverns offering their own unique scenario to their customers.    Homebrew Illusion Beads can be crafted by any mage or enchanter, but due to the process being extremally intellectually intensive, as they need to conjure a perfect image of the Hero or Scenario and also to create more interesting designs, artists, enchanters, mages, and toymakers collaborate to create a new homebrew. A solo crafter is referred to as an Architect.   Homebrew Illusion Beads can be found in most markets, taverns and inns.

    History

Texts referring to Living Scrolls predate the arrival of Aether Crystals, in its original state it was known as Strategy and played by Aguilos WIP aristocrats in its wargame format using physical miniatures. The journal of an innovative Trade Baron give us this insight into its history:
Today I thought the young Magistrel how to play Strategy, he shared with me what I believe is the common sentiment of those of his age toward the game, he expressed that the units were hard to differentiate and that turns took too long as the game requires many dice rolls, while I'm sure the first issue could be fixed with the proper artisan I believe that if both issue were fixed that the game could be available to a much wider audience...
  • Translation of The Daily Life of a Trade Baron, -63 Before Star Fall
  • The oldest known writting describing a game of Strategy, dates to -317 BSF and illustrate the humiliating defeat of a Kitian noble, who in a fit of rage after loosing threw a handful of pebbles at his opponent, it is believed that for this reason forfeiting a match is referred to as "throwing rocks".   Original miniatures of Strategy were carved from Sunbloom wood, some can still be found in Tidelord Osset'al Loradam's personal collection.   The current version of Living Scroll was invented in 24 of the Age of Aether (33 years ago) by Chronicler Alessan Fero of the Loremaster's Association.
