The Veil of Ash and Wails

The Veil of Ash and Wails is a swirling, spectral fog that encircles the isle of Thyraxias. The fog churns like living smoke, its tendrils writhing and pulsing with faint crimson light as if blood flows through its misty veins.

The fog devours both life and matter, leaving only echoes of what once was. Trees crumble to ash; stone melts into the sand, and flesh withers to the bone. Yet amidst the deathly silence, one can sometimes hear the clash of unseen titans—the roars of dragons locked in endless battle and the haunting screams of souls bound to the fog forever.

According to legend, Dragons of long ago quarreled, their greed igniting a war that tore the skies and sundered the earth.

They unleashed forbidden magics in their fury, fracturing the barrier between the mortal world and the spirit realm. The fog rose as a curse, sealing the island and trapping the souls of the fallen in an eternal struggle.

Some believe the fog is a guardian conjured by the last dragon king to protect his people’s secrets. Others say it is the breath of a dying god, hungering for the life it was denied.

Effects of the Fog:

Life Drain – All living creatures within the fog rapidly lose strength, their skin graying and eyes hollowing as their life force is siphoned away. Prolonged exposure leads to complete desiccation.

Matter Decay – Weapons rust, armor crumbles, and ships dissolve into splinters, leaving only bones and echoes behind. Magical items resist briefly but eventually succumb.

Haunting Echoes – The cries of dragons and souls trapped in the mist disorient intruders, driving them to madness or despair. Some whispers even compel adventurers to walk willingly into the fog.

Shifting Paths – The fog moves unpredictably, often separating groups and preventing safe passage. It appears sentient, sealing exits and steering victims deeper into its heart.

Soul Traps – Those who die in the fog cannot move on; their spirits are bound to the mist, becoming part of the wailing chorus.
