Skat

Skat (a.k.a. The Trickster)

"Skat who knows..."
— Beginning of prayers to Skat

Background

Baa Yalu is the most commonly worshipped religion in Minaka Vale, and Skat is one of the three minor deities.   The religion focuses on seven tenets that focus on looking out for danger, being part of a community and the individual's responsibilities within it. Members of the religion call themselves the flock. They are known to be distrustful of strangers but extremely supportive of those in their community and have a high level of cleanliness.

The Trickster

The story of 'Skat and The Stranger' is told throughout Minaka Vale and is particularly popular with children. It is used to explain why Skat is both a trickster and a loner, trying to avoid falling into the trap of trusting strangers again. It is also the reason that Skat is often pictured with a key next to them.   The story itself is translated from the Kurothic Carvings, and much discussion has been had about the nature of the stranger and why Skat invited them inside their den in the first place. Others wonder about said stranger's cruel intentions. Despite this discussion and lack of clarity, it is often referenced as a lesson well learned.

The Myth

Skat the Cunning Fox welcomed a harmless-seeming Stranger into their den, forgetting the Third Tenet's warning about strangers. Once inside, the Stranger revealed cruel intentions and blocked the entrance. But Skat used polished stones lining the den walls to create multiple reflections, saying "I'm standing right here" while appearing in several places at once. As the confused Stranger chased reflections, Skat used a hidden key to unlock a secret door and escape.
