Morning Solace

"Baa who creates,
Who birthed the world.
Baa the vigilant,
Who grazes and wanders and knows.
Bless this house and all those who dwell in it."
— Standard Morning Solace Prayer

Background

Morning Solace (also sometimes called just Solace) is a regular religious practice for followers of Baa Yalu, who consider themselves part of the Flock.

Where

Inside the home, standing or seated in front of the heart of the home, usually near the fireplace.

When

Most followers practice daily in the mornings, but it can be done more often if needed.

What

The household's raw wool (gifted during vows) and any other collected gifts from the gods.

The Practice

  1. Perform the finger snap greeting (fist out palm up, snap twice)
  2. Touch their nose/nose ring
  3. Touch the wool, or pick it up
  4. Speak aloud (or whisper audibly): "Baa who creates, who..." followed by whatever they need
    • (e.g. 'keeps us safe,' 'guides us through hardship,' etc.)
  5. Optionally also address another deity for specific needs
    • (e.g. "Kaw help him on his journey" "Hoo watch over them," "Skat bring me joy")
    • Touching the gift from that god if they have it
  6. If practicing as a family/group: Hum the single unbroken note together
  7. Touch the wool again or put it down
  8. Touch their nose/nose ring again
  9. Perform the finger snap greeting again
  10. Speak aloud: "Baa creates"

Additional Details

Children

For those not old enough to perform the practice by themselves, they do it with their parents. Children are encouraged to join in with what they can, touching their noses, for example, and touching the wool or other gifts from the gods. Becoming old enough to do it by themselves is often a source of great pride for both parent and child.

Personalisations

Solace is normally practised privately, and whether or not they practice is between them and Baa. However, sharing not only how they practice but also the frequency of it with other members of the Flock is considered cathartic. If someone is visibly struggling, others may encourage them to seek Solace more often, or to add a particular wording or quirk.
