Guild identification tag

These tags can be anywhere from the size of an adult human's palm to only 1/4 of that same palm. They consist of a thin metal sheet engraved or embossed with the logo of the organization it belongs to. The address of the guild is often written above the logo while the name and identification number of the relevant guild member is written on the bottom.
If a guild works with ranks, this is often included on the tag as well. A common ranking, though not universal, is to simply follow the value steps of money. Going from copper to silver, to electrum, to gold, to platinum, to diamond.

History

These types of tags were first used in armies and mercenary guilds in order to identify fallen soldiers. It was gradually adapted by adventure guilds and merchant guilds over time. Eventually, the tags became a commonality among any organization worth its salt.
There are a few exceptions, however. Not every organization would like to broadcast their whereabouts or who their members are, such as assassin guilds. They do have an alternate identification method for their members though these can often only tell someone they're from the same guild.

Significance

Guild identification tags are pretty simple in their function, they help guilds identify their members. This is extremely useful for the administration of larger guilds. For guilds in the more dangerous line of work, such as traveling merchants, adventurers, and mercenaries, these tags also provide a way for the guild to identify dead or missing members.   Based on the material alone, identification tags are pretty worthless. They are often not even worth one copper coin and are made of cheap metal.
Instead, the value of these things comes from the reward next of kin or employers may give to someone who can to some extent report to them what happened to a missing person. The process for this is often handled by a separate department within the guild or expedited to a local temple which interrogates the tag's finder. This is out of worry that some people will try to make a living from killing people and then claim the grieving family's reward with lies.
