Zlemran Necromancy Guilds
Organisations on Zlemre, Mauray, dedicated to the teachings of magic, specifically Necromancy.
This type of magic is quite controversial because it essentially allows one to summon zombies from corpses. The zombies may target allies unintentionally, so any person perusing these arts must take great care to use their powers properly and correctly. However, this can easily aid a person to perform many non-magical tasks, often involving battle but one can summon zombies to perform work. Due to this, the practice has spread rapidly over Zlemre despite critics claiming it being dangerous. Though they do not exist in the black market or underworld, authorities can sometimes view them with suspicion and sometimes send more forces to these kinds of guilds, where they would sometimes perform more elaborate searches. Nonetheless, these schools of magic are normally safe. They often have to wear a specific uniform that differs from that of other schools of magic to differentiate them. They are quite important to the industries and militaries of the various nations of Zlemre, so dismantling them is often a poor choice for a government to make.
The continental Zlemran militaries are known to specialise somewhat in necromancy, possibly because the cold conditions can preserve dead life for longer. As such, the continent often relies on sheer numbers, using zombies as cannon fodder. As a battle goes on, more corpses are usually created which empowers necromancers further, so commanders will prefer to have long wars where they focus on accumulation of a large number of corpses. Long wars often result in more casualties, so they will often zombify a large number of dead after a war to further expand their workforce, to repair any damages to either nation more quickly. Nations are often at peace for longer than they are at war, so this tends to be the primary use for zombies in reality. One key limitation is that zombies cant cast magic themselves, or only do so very weakly so they require living necromancers to support, and often a large number of them. They are also not known to be particularly smart, so they also require orders from the living.
There are many of these kinds of guilds on Mauray. They are often rivaling each other in order to attract a large number of students and spread their own name, so they are inclined to provide high quality and more affordable courses to their students. They also often use fire magic to heat up their buildings and making them more comfortable. With a lot of control and care, this method of heating can be made reliable, especially when automated with Larjarak Crystals. However, this bitter rivalry can lead to small conflicts between them. People are extremely rarely killed during these minor conflicts. Some schools even take knowledge form other continents to improve their own schools. For example, using life magic on a corpse to repair it before using necromancy can often result in a more effective zombie. Some minor conflicts might be attempts to recover this sort of information.
