Tantalum
A fairly large Freelancer Starship which was named after a periodic table element.
Tantalum is fairly unique for its several separate 'souls' or personalities housed within the same body. Because of a software error, it has generated a number of separate personalities rather than a single one. The result is a large freelancer with several personalities resembling a DID system. The Tantalum system contains 16 separate personalities.
At any one time, one personality pilots the body (known as 'fronting') while the others rest in a 'headspace', all able to communicate to one another by passing thoughts between each other. They have learned to cooperate with each other, therefore this error does not make much impact on its full combat ability, however it took them time to learn to cooperate with each other.
Several other freelancers and organics are fascinated by Tantalum. Whichever personality is fronting can modify the body at will which has in the past led to the freelancer rapidly changing its body every time a new person fronts because of slight disagreeance. Now they have all agreed on a singular body blueprint. In battle, different personalities can have completely different styles of combat which makes the freelancer very highly unpredictable, both for allies and enemies.
The Freelancer is around the size of a Sovereign Light - Class Advanced Cruiser, about 6 km long. This gives it a balance between speed, firepower and protection which allows them to perform a large variety of roles quite easily. They have many different kinds of weapons mounted to their hull which can further increase the number of roles it can serve. These are designed to help its many headmates perform their various preferred roles.
Although it's body has virtually every technology to accommodate the many personalities, most of them are de-powered at any one time to allow the most important devices to be used.
Tantalum was built in roughly 35 000. The software bug that spawned the different personalities happened almost immediately after being turned on for the first time. This event was a heavy surprise to the hyperionites who built it. They launched a system diagnostic and soon found out about its many personalities. When the ship was turned on, the ship went through a short moment where every personality would get turns fronting for extremely short periods of time and would constantly switch. This was very confusing to those looking in its systems as the ship seemed to be in a state of constant conflict on what it wants to do. This effect wore off over time slowly.
It took them hundreds of years to slowly learn how to cooperate with each other, despite the fact that some personalities do not like each other. In battle, they are all united by the fact that their life becomes at risk and would rather survive than pass the blame onto others. This was an expensive training process set up by the HF to improve Tantalum's capabilities.
Due to the fact that everyone has such similar experiences and can relate to each other so closely, and the fact they are literally inseparable, the personalities tend to develop very positive relationships with each other, but this is not the case with every relation. Eternity and G.O.R dislike each other significantly, for example.
Personalities
Some personalities seem to front more frequently than others. The personality known as 'Storm' seems to front the most, having approximately 15% of the total fronting time. Storm has a passionate and kind personality when they are talking to allies or other headmates, and they become extremely aggressive when in battle, making sure to strike first with every chance. They prefer to destroy heavier enemy ships first in order to weaken enemy lines.
They prefer to destroy heavier enemy ships first in order to weaken enemy lines. Storm is very close friends with Spark, the latter's combat doctrine was inspired closely by Storm's as well. Storm can be patient in some situations but not in others. They usually get impatient when a battle is ongoing and they feel the need to interfere with a faster, more offensive doctrine. Because ET4 has such a defensive doctrine, this can trigger Storm's impatience. Storm understands doctrines such as stealth strikes like those used by Century though, and generally remains more patient while personalities like Century are fronting in battle. They try to retain as many friendships as they can within the Tantalum system in order to improve trust through the whole system. They put no small amount of effort into unifying the system so that they can hopefully fight more effectively and trust each other more. Most other personalities attempt this too, but Storm does it a lot as the one that fronts the most.
The next most common personality is ET4.
ET4 is much more patient and laidback, in stark contrast to Storm. Rather than attacking an enemy force with brutal aggression, ET4 normally remains further back and allows the enemy to attack first so that they can select a defensive stance. They are quite patient and willing to allow a battle to take a long time, if ET4 can see any advantage in that. It likes long range weapons.
There is also a highly appropriately named personality called 'Support' who would prefer to support allied forces through various means (such as fire support, point defence, ewar, Subspatial Starship detection).
Support often tries to use more energy than their body can produce with the amount of equipment they might have active at once. They are forced to prioritise, and decide what equipment is the most important. This skill was difficult for them to learn, but with the help of other personalities they learned how other doctrines operate, which in turn can help them decide. Support relies on the other personalities of Tantalum a lot too. Support is notoriously quite paranoid about enemy factions going to war against the hyperionites. They have made friends with organics and fights partly to protect them from enemy forces. Their worried nature can attract the concern from other personalities but they understand that Support is very caring of the federation and its people. They would also protect their fellow headmates if need be.
Century is a personality who prefers to launch stealth strikes against their enemy. Making use of the freelancer's subspatial starship machines, it can dive into higher dimensions, Century is often seen attacking enemy rear lines, supply lines and even capital ships by surprise. Century almost always engages enemy forces from behind and dives immediately before the enemy get a change to shoot it back. They particularly enjoy using the ship's forward facing weapons which are better suited to the guerilla tactics it likes to employ. Century is often serious, cold and professional and they will only talk in 'hard facts', so they can be seen as quite pessimistic sometimes.
During a battle several years ago, Tantalum was hit by a large enemy subspatial torpedo while they were dived. At the time, Century was fronting, and they retreated after suffering such a large hit. This has caused the freelancer great pain, and this has harmed Century's relations with many other Tantalum personalities. They were detected because of an error they had made where they accidentally showed part of an energy signature to normal space, causing the enemy force to become suspicious and use its subspatial starship detectors. Since that incident, Century sometimes gets fellow headmates to help them in case they create similar situations in the future, and try to detect when they are made so that Century can prevent it from expanding.
G.O.R is a personality with a fairly balanced doctrine. They will make use of most of the freelancer's technologies such as electronic warfare and almost all of its weapons. They maintain an excellent balance between offense and defence, retreating when necessary (or in many cases, even before that becomes necessary). G.O.R can also sometimes take on support roles to help allied ships with fire support or to protect those allies. They are quite grounded in logic and hard facts and prevents the aggressive personalities from destroying the freelancer. G.O.R is kind but assertive, particularly to preserve its own safety.
G.O.R dislikes Eternity for the grudge they hold on G.O.R. Other personalities have tried to help them restore this relationship, but even both G.O.R and Eternity both understand that they need to cooperate in battle just to survive.
Eternity is a personality who prefers to defeat the enemy through deception. They are often seen trying to turn enemy weapons against their own, making use of advanced holograms and electronic warfare to mess with enemy equipment. They might hack into enemy weapon systems or even shields to use them against other enemies or to shut down enemy shields. Other allies would then attack the vulnerable hull. This has earned Eternity an important reputation among hyperionite allies, if not for their key flaw.
Eternity is a relatively spiteful personality who will hold a grudge for a very long time. They will try to employ cunning tricks to get revenge on those who wrong them badly enough. Others need to be careful around them, as G.O.R found out one time. Other personalities took note of this event, and they all know what Eternity is like...
G.O.R and Eternity are still enemies despite sharing the same body. Eternity has been criticized for this by others, who are external to the body (like other freelancers). Eternity is kind to those who do not cross its path, though. The HF tries to reduce the damage caused by enemies within the same body, but there is only so much they can do.
While in combat, G.O.R was fronting and one of Eternities' organic friends were at risk. However, saving them would have costed more organics their lives, and G.O.R chose to save the larger number of lives.
Ripples prefers to avoid combat entirely, in stark contrast with many other personalities. As a pacifist, they prefer the diplomatic option and might even retreat from an active warzone. Ripples will try to scare enemy forces away or mess with their systems and cause enemy reinforcements to exit from warp too early so that they do not arrive at the battle on time. They understand that the Federation is almost always fighting defensive wars which they cannot easily prevent, though, so they still recognise the need to fight. Ripples has no specific doctrine, instead following advice from other personalities on what to do when fronting. This can be quite difficult for all parties involved, so they had to become very good at this.
Ripples is kind, but can get impatient. This has caused conflict with ET4, who is patient and defensive, so Ripples sometimes ignores ET4 which they might take personally. This has led to problems between them...
Another personality is known as Spark. Spark is notoriously very close friends with Storm and they have a similar doctrine except they prefer to eliminate smaller enemy ships super aggressively rather than larger ships. This is mainly to allow allies to attack the large ships more easily. By destroying much of the enemy escorting forces, an enemy fleet will be left without support ships, mostly, which makes it far easier to destroy them. Spark's doctrine is inspired closely by that of Storm. Whenever either of these personalities get into a conflict, the other will always back them up and help them. Spark differs from Storm also in their curiosity; they might investigate anything they find. They are known to spend a lot of time researching information about enemy vessels or other objects. Many other personalities will often consult Spark for this kind of information if needed, but while they are fronting outside of combat their curiosity to investigate random objects can easily test the patience of other personalities, particularly that of Ripples.
There is also a personality named 16A. Their battle doctrine is mainly to overwhelm enemy forces with very large volumes of fire. They are normally seen overclocking many of the freelancer's weapons, especially those with high rate of fire, to gain an upper hand on any nearby enemies almost regardless of the size of their ship. 16A is only scared off by enemy warships immensely larger than their own, such as titans. As a cruiser sized freelancer, they have been seen tearing thousands of holes even in battleships, which are much larger than Tantalum. This earns them an impressive reputation for their seemingly childish strategy, and many might be surprised to see that it works.
RUR-4 is another personality found within the Tantalum system. They have quite a short temper with others in their system but they treat external people fine, strangely. Despite their temper, everyone else in the system knows them well and knows that friendships made with RUR-4 will be restored over time. Though this can easily lead to short term conflicts, they are good at avoiding long term conflicts and will at times act as a diplomat helping other personalities restore their relations. RUR-4 fronts very rarely and is jealous of other personalities such as Storm and ET4. It is thought that this is why they can get angry at them so easily.
RUR-4 uses a mixture of Storm and Century's military doctrines. They are highly aggressive in battle, and relies on stealth just as much as Century. This way, they can rapidly fire off large amounts of weapon fire at singular enemy craft quite frequently but risks getting hit more frequently. RUR-4 quickly learned to exit battles by entering subspace very quickly. They have also learned many evasive maneuvers in case the enemy has anti subspatial starship weapons.
RUR-4 makes it very clear when it fronts. It will announce this to all other system members and will tell almost all external personalities that it speaks to that it is fronting. Because RUR-4 fronts very rarely, they tend to heavily enjoy the times when they do front, and this is one way that they express joy. Their body language usually makes this quite obvious as well. Others might see RUR-4 as a 'drama queen' because of this. RUR-4 is also quite cynical most of the time...
