Slime

A species of strange slimes encountered on Mauray. Slimes are highly vulnerable to fire. They have arrived on this world via a huge comet containing specimens of slimes.
Slimes can grow to very large sizes if they have a reliable source of food, though above a certain size they will undergo mitosis and split into 2 smaller halves, of roughly equal size. Their approximate size limit depends on the size of their prey but it would usually be several meters tall and many more wide, if placed on flat ground. As they can seep through small gaps in enclosures, one would need a box that is completely sealed off to enclose them. Despite this, some zoos have placed them into large, strong glass containers. It has been found that they can grow to incredibly large sizes before the surface tension holding a slime together is overwhelmed by their weight which causes them to reproduce anyway. This normally happens when they approach about 100m in radius, when collapsed into a sphere. Some slimes have been tamed and will not target people at sight. This is a long and dangerous process because slimes are not intelligent and they find learning to be difficult.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Varies between individuals and over time. Their bodies stay in 1 large cluster constantly (unless reproducing)

Genetics and Reproduction

After reaching a critical size Slimes can split apart.

Growth Rate & Stages

They grow about as fast as they eat. While slimes can grow to near limitless sizes, they typically prefer to reproduce by splitting. Strangely, different sizes are often differently coloured. Large ones are more red, and small green.

Ecology and Habitats

They mostly live in the huge underground where the sun has less effect of them.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Slimes can eat any form of meat. They do this by absorbing prey into their body and digesting it. They starve after not eating for a few weeks. They have a slow metabolism, allowing them to survive longer without digesting anything but also restricting their acess to energy, making them slower.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

They can form eye-like organs and can feel what shape their body takes up at any point in time. They have no other method of perception.
