La'atot Class Deep Space Weapon Platform
A large railgun of the Sulethis Republic intended to fire at an enemy ship in a star system up to about 20 ly away.
The La'atot is small in comparison to other faction deep space railguns, but is less powerful, still expensive and still slow and vulnerable to short range battles. It is just 500 m in length and although it can be used in larger numbers than other deep space railguns, they remain highly expensive. The la'atot is designed to be used against smaller ships than other deep space railguns as well. It can cripple anything down to a cruiser reliably and as such the railgun shell itself can change its trajectory similar to a smart munition shell as its onboard FTL drive is capable of generating a corrective virtual force on the shell. Also it cannot be used as a regular starship armament even as a spinal weapon because of the extremely powerful magnetic field that it uses to propel the round. This would act similar to an electromagnetic pulse and would destroy most electronic equipment on any ship it is mounted on.
The requirement for the La'atot came around while the SR was fighting off a large number of Grand Artanat Empire forces. They wanted to be able to strike the many artanat ships from very long range in a doctrine similar to artillery striking. This would then weaken GAE forces and make attacking their space easier. The GAE is considered a relatively low tech faction though, so the railguns proved highly effective against them. The GAE had to develop their own counters, as deep space weapon platforms cannot easily fight each other due to being almost entirely made of its primary weapon, they are expensive and there are probably better targets to hit. The La'atot will probably revel its location when it fires due to the extreme energy emission that it releases. Because of its small size and extreme dedication to mounting this massive primary weapon, it cannot mount a large thruster or warp drive, meaning the weapon platform is quite slow. Nonetheless, even the HF has become impressed that the SR, or any faction at all, has managed to fit such a large weapon on a very small vehicle. This does make it difficult to reposition around the battlefield to wherever it needs to be, though. Its energy is supplied by a small fusion reactor as well as a very powerful emergency capacitor which will store a massive amount of power within its magnetic field.
