Szörnvodaz (SOOrn-VO-DAz)

Ervenian Era, 1051 AB
Szörnvodaz is an order of Kyth, primarily warders, that specializes in monster hunting. The order is headquartered in Barlangvár, in the Pueblian Wilds of Epeoris.   Barlangvár is built atop layered ruins, some say former barrows themselves and is saturated with dampening fields that suppress hauntings, whispers, and echoes of the dead.

Philosophy and Doctrine

Their interpretation of the Visiderum is utilitarian rather than reverent. It is not a sacred equilibrium, but a diagnostic tool and a means of identifying fractures in reality where monsters anchor themselves. They believe that monsters are bound to blood, place or memory must be drawn fully into the world. Mercy should not be offered because it can be cruelty deffered, the suffering of one may prevent the annhiliation of many and diplomacy ends where recurrence happens.   Unlike the Karr, Szörnvodaz does not pursue vengeance, as it accepts that justice may be indistinguishable from cruelty when viewed too closely.

History

Szörnvodaz arose in the aftermath of the Dissolution of the First Empire of Ader when Lake Kadia and the surrounding lands became saturated with unquiet dead. Early Kyth attempts at pacification failed; the spirits did not seek balance.   It was then that Szörnvodaz codified Barrow Hunting, a doctrine-shattering practice that rejected traditional Kyth restraint.   The order was formally dissolved in 241AB under religious and political pressure, only to be re-established in 380 AB when similar horrors re-emerged and no other force could contain them.   To common folk, Szörnvodaz is a necessary horror.
