Nôlorith

Ervenian Era, 1051 AB
Nôlorith is a smoky , violet-black crystal veined with cold, silvery motes like a starfield trapped in obsidian. When held to the ear it hums faintly and never quite the same pitch twice. Nôlorith forms in geodes at leyline knots, in old teleport-scars, and in seams beneath ancient ward-works, notably around the Obelisks of Aeloriandor or existing portals ever once in a while - Existing examples are Elven Gateways, Telarion Ithildar, the portals in Ciambavign Highway or other portals which are used frequently, even by momentarily Teleport Spell.

Properties

Physical & Chemical Properties

Dimensional Inertia
Unworked Nôlorith creates a quiet resonance that prevents all forced crossings (teleport, dimension door, mist-step, gate, word of recall, most circle-magic) into or out of its ward radius.
Scaling
Effect grows with continuous lattice and placement. As fieldcraft:
  • Amulet shard (thumb-size): anchors a 10–30 ft personal bubble.
  • Door lintel brick: locks a threshold; no “blink” through.
  • Room ring (12 bricks): seals ~200–500 ft chamber.
  • Keep courses (lined walls/floors): denies a whole structure/yard. Broken, drilled, or heavily faceted pieces might lose strength; continuous veins and careful orientation amplify it.
Celestial Magic is known to cause the effect to expand exponentially. In addition, Draconic Magic has almost the same effect as the Celestial Magic.
Overcoming
Prolonged disjunction or a rare harmonic key (a chime cut from the same vein) can open a brief window. Raw brute-force gates tend to tear the stone.

Life & Expiration

Continuous thunder or deep-earth quakes can detune a ward; careful retuning restores it.

History & Usage

Industrial Use

Mortar use
Nôlorith dust mixed into lime (“Null-mortar”) retains ~60% potency if the sectiion of the wall is laid in a single day and struck with a tuning-chime at set intervals while curing.

Byproducts & Sideproducts

Vesperbloom Resin
Also known as Seer’s Pitch, which is essentially a night-flower distillate from shadow-gardens that, when painted in one thin coat over exposed Nôlorith (or mixed 1:20 into Null-mortar), bends and scatters sight-threads. Together they create a Seerblind Field that frustrates scrying, clairvoyance, locate effects, and most sensor-projection which is far more less costly then involving a lead sheet as the scrying potency reaches great heights and virtually blocks miles above from scrying.   Known alternates for the Seer's Pitch are Veil-Leaf or dwarven lead-foil which can substitute for the resin.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Trade is extremely regulated; For example, Gontal forbids export as they have almost non-existent of those resources. Counterfeits are common and true Nôlorith always hums and chills dew to a frosted ring at dawn.
