Far Fever
Ervenian Era, 1051 AB
Far Fever is a type of food poisoning that may result from eating matter that originated in the Far Realm. This includes the meat of many aberrations, and most other types of organic matter.
Symptoms
Like mundane food poisoning; the most common symptoms include diarrhea, stomach pain or cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fever. If the condition persists for more than a few hours, the alien nature of the substance will induce far fever.
Far fever is often mistaken for dehydration, as its early symptoms are lethargy, headaches, and blurry or double vision. If allowed to progress, severe far fever may occur; symptoms of severe far fever include:
blindness, accompanied by visual hallucinations
aphasia
speaking in tongues
paranoia
high fever, reaching up to 47 C in humans; the fever is anomalous, as it isn’t lethal nor can it cause lasting damage
Treatment
Treatment is standard treatment for food poisoning - hydration, eating small meals of bland foods if able, and rest. In case of severe far fever, treatment should also include emotional support and cooling the patient’s body in ice water.
Prevention
The easiest way to prevent poisoning is avoiding consumption of food stuffs originating in the far realm. Creatures native to the far realm, such as Mind Flayers, are not susceptible to those risks, while creatures related to the far realm, such as Gith, are almost as unlikely to be poisoned, but not completely immune.
While possessing psionic capabilities does not mitigate a creature’s risk of developing far fever, trained psions, such as Kyth, are less likely to be poisoned and can expect a shorter recovery time.
