Doublespeak
Ervenian Era, 1051 AB
Doublespeak is the langauge of Mezzofiends.
The mezzofiend language is as complex and unpleasant as its speakers. Imagine the combined aroma of rotting roses and windblown sand – that's the closest most get to describing it. While telepathic communication is common, mezzofiends often choose to speak aloud, especially to non-mezzofiends, to ensure their messages are understood. However, this "clarity" comes with a twist. mezzofiends use telepathy for nuanced or important conversations, while resorting to spoken word for simpler ideas – the exact opposite of what most races would do.
Intercepting telepathic conversations requires specific magic, but deciphering coded messages and thieves' cant in their spoken language is even harder. Nearly every Daemon word carries multiple meanings, allowing them to convey at least two messages simultaneously through phrasing, word choice, and inflection. Less intelligent daemons struggle with these linguistic subtleties, often leading to hilarious misunderstandings.
