Cockatrice

Ervenian Era, 1051 AB
The cockatrice is a small, avian, magical beast that resembles a bat-winged, serpent-tailed rooster. It is notorious for its petrification ability.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Although about the size of a large turkey or goose, a cockatrice more closely resembles a chicken, though it is a hideous hybrid with the wings of a bat and a lizard-like tail. Its tail has yellow-green scales, its wings are a grey shade, its feet and beak are yellow, and its feathers are of a golden-brown hue.   A male cockatrice has a rooster's wattles and comb, which the females lacks. These wattles and comb, as well as the eyes and tongue of both sexes, are all red.   A cockatrice's bite, though not very harmful on its own, delivers a potent metaphysical calcifying agent, which can cause petrification in those affected by it. Cockatrices are completely immune to this agent, even if delivered by another cockatrice, but aren't immune to other forms of petrification.
