The
Abyssium Pits are
abyssium mines in
Dunklandervon operated by
Gontal. The pits are known for their harsh conditions, even when compared to other Gontali slave labor operations.
Access
The pits are accessible by a series of cranes, which lower slaves, overseers, and enforcers into the pits. The uppermost level is tightly guarded to prevent escape, and is operated solely by guards. Slaves inhabit only the lower levels, and visit the uppermost level only once, on their way down.
Conditions
Being assigned to the pits is tantamount to a death sentence; save for exceptional cases, such as the upper echelons of Gontal taking interest in a certain slave, those who work the pits die in the pits. Slaves are crammed in tight living conditions, either in tents (in the upper levels), wooden sheds (in the middle levels) or in caves (in the lower levels). Medical treatment is nonexistent. Food is sufficient in order to maintain productivity. The average slave survives ten years before dying from untreated illnesses, infections, or abuse.
