History

The founding of Crow's Eye is not a happy one, well...at least not initially. Before the grovan cities broke free of the Serferine kingdom, a large number of grovans unhappy with the rulers of Serferine, left to search for a new home to set roots. They sailed northwest, until they spotted a large rock formation in the shape of a crow. The land was a jungle, hot and humid and the rock was high enough to provide the perfect amount of shade for a new home. After a few months, a couple of small sustainable settlements had been built. Water sources were good and there were plenty of animals to hunt, the farming was proving difficult though. An old women appeared one day, with grey hair and few bright blonde streaks left, freckles on the left side of her face and a sickly small animal peaking out of a satchel. She was ragged and tired, out of breath like she had running. But there was no around to chase her, and she seemed to appear out of nowhere, but she was undoubtedly scared. She asked for a place to rest, to eat and drink so she could continue. But the men knew her for what she was, a witch, and trusted nothing she said. They refused her and she had no strength left to protest, she threatened them and they laughed, she pleaded and they rolled over in fits, she promised riches and they mocked her with exaggerated faces. Clouds began to appear on the horizon and they saw her tremble, then with as much disdain as she could muster. Cursed them and their families, to forever wear the face of a jester and perform in their time of need. When she did they all screamed in pain, their flesh burning hot; When it stopped, they had the marks of the jester imprinted on them. Then she swore they would have to bargain for whatever they needed, and could never be given anything of importance. Any food given to them would rot in their mouths, water would turn to sand, clothes would come undone at the seams and housing would crumble before them. After this she hobbled off as quickly as she could, never to be seen again.

What at first seemed like it would be the end of their people, they soon realized they could not accept anything freely given nor taken. But they could compete for it, any competition big or small would suffice and they were perfectly fine. This alone made them excel in games, duels, cards, tricks, puzzles and riddles. From there they would go out into different cities challenging who ever the most prominent or richest competitor they could find, and get them to wager a fortune. And almost always they would return home victorious, bringing riches and materials, food and weapons, armor, ships, herds, knowledge, magical training and techniques. Whatever they could get their on hands on or people to stupid to know not to wager. It worked, their almost disastrous plan to leave for greener pastures had fielded a surprising success.

They built Crow's Eye into the free city you see today. Where everything is exchanged through competition, and this brings no shortage of visitors. Possibly the only place you'll see a sand-shark and a man be cordial with an orsai, or a centaur and a dwarf with a werewolf. All come for the glory or the competition or the riches. Crow's Eye is the free city of high rises and deep valleys. Those who come here may not know on which side they may end up, but for many, in the first time of their lives, they may have a chance to change it.
