Summer Camp Prep 2025
Assignment 1: Nourishment
Think about ways the theme of Nourishment affects your world. Do people generally have what they need? What happens when they don't? Most people in the world are Nourished in the sense of having a decent supply of food, water, and accessible natural spaces. In general, the world is more filled with natural spaces than densely-packed city spaces, and most houses have more room to play than what you might imagine in today's IRL cities. It is also not uncommon to have plants growing inside and outside the home to help sustain yourself and provide natural beauty to the area. In general, creating meals with many servings is encouraged, sharing food with your neighbors isn't unheard of, and larger feasts occur both in gatherings and in singular on average once a season, sometimes more if a particular occasion suggests it.
Water access is provided to all households that are within "government land," which is an invisible line that includes a high percentage of properties and excludes only a few homes that either have a long history of private ownership or are part of protected natural lands that the government is not allowed to interfere with. For the few properties that don't have government access to water, or for those who cannot afford their water bills, water can be obtained from a variety of streams and wells. Rain water can also be purified for drinking, however this method is more expensive and less effective in most cases. Some public locations offer free water cups or water access, which is great for those with no other options.
In a more personalized sense, Nourishment is a very common theme for relationships in my world. As a person with atypical expectations for romantic relationships, and even more atypical family relationships, I have a lot of experience with having relationship needs that others don't expect. Many of my characters have very strong desires within their relationship dynamics, and the fulfilment or lack of fulfilment of those needs is a theme I explore constantly.
The most common pattern I follow is where one person's specific needs in a relationship go unnoticed until there is a big reveal or realization moment, followed by compromise. There are so many ways to play with this pattern, changing up the unnourished person themself, the reveal, and the resolution in different ways. I don't have the want or the space here to go into each combination referenced in The QuillOVerse,
