Voletarian

A member of the Elder Races of Thelekar, these men have wandered the Voletarian mountain range for thousands of years. Born from the bloodline of Khoran the Storm King, they are a holy minority that rarely ventures outside their city. Often compared to Aasimar thanks to their divine blood, these men bear a closer kinship to the race of humans, bearing much physical resemblance to them. The devotion they have to their god and royal dynasty is baffling to many who have not spent time among these reclusive people, but the opinions of such people matter little when you never have to interact with them.

Family names

Clan Voletaria The eldest clan in the holy city, the Voletaria name is only passed onto those who were born from the seed of the Storm's Firstborn. While the family was thought to have died off thousands of years ago, the name has recently returned thanks to the prophesied Child of Sky, the Young King Kora.   Clan Eberhardt Adam Eberhardt's lineage took over when Clan Voletaria faded away. Choosing the bravery represented by the bear to pass on, his people took on the name Bear Heart and have long stood as the vanguard against invasion, insurrection, and treachery. It was under the careful eye of the Eberhardt family that Voletaria rose to prominence in the politics of Arith, and it is thanks to them that the nation remains independent and stands tall.   Clan Elefantengeist Waltram Elefantengeist's family has long protected the wealth of Voletaria's treasury. Named for their clever mind and shrewd nature, similar to their namesake of the elephant, this clan is in charge of making sure the people of the holy city never have any want. Be it through supporting small businesses or providing those in poverty the means to rise out of it, the Elefantengeist Clan is ready to aid those in need for the betterment of all.   Clan Luxenklinge Volker Luxenklinge's family has become the largest in the city. Named for their tenacity in battle, as relentless as light itself, this clan has long made up a majority of the Voletarian defense force, and are even the creators of the Cerulean Armigers, the King's royal guard force. Given its size, the clan has 3 major offshoots from the main line, including the Lux family, the Licht family, and the Schwert family, each with its own responsibilities.   Clan Katzengnade Griselda Katzengnade, Khoran's only daughter, passed on her incredible inner strength and grace to her family. Founding the Sanctum of the Thundering Fist, her influence has spread across the continent, resulting in many men and women travelling to Voletaria purely to learn this unique form of fighting. She was also the first to discover the power of the Voletarian Mists, and founded the Grima Knights in order to protect the Stormdrake Palace from any attack. These mist warriors have become known as the Obsidian Bannerets, and they are the bane of any would-be assassin attempting to eliminate Voletarian nobility.   Only the direct firstborn bloodlines adopt the main clan name as their surname, with most utilizing some shorter or related version of their clan of origin. Some examples include the Lux family from clan Luxenklinge, and the Bärentatze family of clan Eberhardt.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Voletarians are incredibly recognizable, sticking out from crowds like sore thumbs. Their white hair and bright blue eyes are genetic side effects of their divine lineage, as throughout all their avatars, Khoran maintains his white hair and crackling blue eyes. Voletarian fashion is also very distinct, far less complicated than the rest of the world. They generally wear white togas accented by their simplistic golden bands at the neck, wrists, ankles, and waist. These bands are rather large, comparable to bracers more than a thin bracelet. Artisans craft them this way, forgoing the intricate designs of other jewelers in favor of the simple, armor-like design that honors many of the virtues the Stormlord exemplifies: humility. When the entire city is full of people wearing the same golden bands, it removes the very notion of jewelry distinguishing a person's importance and value. In Voletaria, all life is considered equal, and the entire populace shows this with their uniform golden accents.   This uniformity exists only within Voletarian fashion, however. As far as hair styles go, you couldn't find a more varied group. Given the recent integration of Aristean blood into the larger clans of Luxenklinge and Elefantengeist, hair textures are no longer the same across every Voletarian. Some tie their hair in braids which are adorned with golden ties, and others prefer to let their hair loose and wild like the Stormlord's most commonly used avatar. Many in the military choose to shave their heads entirely, while others intricately tie their hair in a braided bun designed to specifically be worn under Voletarian helmets.   The last commonly seen aesthetic trend among Voletarians are special tattoos, not seen anywhere else. Liquid lightning harvested from the eternal storms around Voletaria is used in place of ink, glowing a white-blue hue under the skin. These glowing tattoos can only be administered by adepts of the Church of the Storm, as they are considered highly important in the worship of Khoran. They will often be given when a person has accomplished a great deed, overcome a personal hurdle of note, or spent enough time within the church or the army as a sort of visible ranking. The oldest members of the church are tattooed across their entire body, their seniority unmistakable as they glow faintly with Khoran's power at all times.

Gender Ideals

Khoran is a being who, while he was a man during his mortal life, chooses a number of avatars to present himself. Some scholars believe this is because of different weather cycles on Arith, but its unclear. This fluidity is something that his descendants value, and often practice in their lives. A binary difference between male and female is not a part of Voletarian society, despite all their neighbors often leaning far too deeply into such a divide. This was most blatantly seen during the reign of High Lord Gehrman executing a Voletarian squire, as well as attempting to execute the young Adam Eberhardt VI, for the romantic bond they shared despite both presenting as male. This was the first time such an atrocity had been committed against a Voletarian person, and it greatly changed the relationship Voletaria shared with the world. While previously a race of people that would often travel Arith and visit other cities, this event was shocking enough to cause them to become borderline isolationist, only allowing in so many visitors to the holy city and rarely venturing out at all. Though the Turtle Rebellion ended High Lord Dunwall's ruling, the death of the young Voletarian squire was cemented in Voletarian history as a grim reminder of the cruelty that the world could offer.
