The vast expanse of the Akriteru Desert seldom sees many travellers. The barren landscape stretches for thousands of miles; a perpetual graveyard to a long-lost kingdom that once flourished across the rolling sands. Remnants of that mighty empire are still visible, despite much being lost to time.
Many have wandered in to the desert in search for adventure and treasure, and bought back stories of all manner of strange sites and creatures. One of thee myths, with more substance to the story than most, is that of the Aarakocra - a race of bird-like beings that fly over the remains of the dead civilization.
With a body structure similar to that of a human but with avian features, Aarakocra typically stand around 5 to 7 feet tall. Each has a set of wings protruding from their backs, with wingspans ranging from 12 to 20 feet. Their bodies are covered in feathers, which can be found in a variety of natural colours such a brown, greys, whites and blacks, although it has been said some brighter colours an be found on occasion. A beak is found in place of a mouth, and they have talon-like feet and hands.
Behaviour and Abilities
Encountered rarely, Aarakocra often attack any trespassers to their lands. How far these extend, and where exactly the Aarakocra roost is unknown. The first sightings will typically be a pair, flying high overhead. These will not draw closer to any perceived threat, but would instead fly off in to the distance, returning a short time later with a much larger force. Many say that Aarakocra attacks are swift and fierce, the creatures diving at their prey, armed with elaborately decorated spears, bows and strange, sickle-like swords known as "khopesh".
Many Aarakocra are often seen wearing gleaming armour of gold, most often a chest-plate and bracers. These appear lightweight but sturdy, leading many to believe they are made of an unknown metal not dissimilar to Dwarven mithril. Where the Aarakocra get this is unknown, much like the rest of their cultural habits.
Celestial Influence
Researchers have tied the Aarakocra to the list civilization of Akriteru, with many of the carvings and hieroglyphics portraying the bird-like creatures. There appears to be relevance with the Four Winds, rumoured to be the religion which the old empire of the region followed. The Ogres of the Ari'Salar Empire also know of the Aarakocra, seeing them as some form of holy creature not to be disturbed. The religious leaders of the Ogres will not divulge much more however, often fearing that the "bird-men of the desert" are always listening.
