Dual- and Multi-classed Characters

A dual-class improves in two classes simultaneously. His experience is divided equally between each class. Options available for multiclassing are Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Scout, Sorcerer, Thief, and Wizard. The character can use the abilities of both classes at any time, with only a few restrictions, but cannot combine classes from the same group.

A multi-class character character is one who starts with a single class, advances to moderate level, then changes to a second character class and starts over again. The character retains the benefits and abilities of the first class but never again earns experience for using them. There are some limitations on combining the abilities of the two classes but, as long as minimum ability and alignment requirements are met, there are no restrictions on the possible character class combinations, other than each class must me from a different group.

Dual-classing

Characters at 1st level have the option of dual-classing; that is, advancing in more than one class at a time. The character can choose 2 of the previous classes and starts as 1st level in each. The character gains the better of each class feature but must abide by any class restrictions. For example:

Larry wants to create a religious crusader Aelfred and decides that a Cleric/Fighter is his best option. He must have a minimum of 9 in Strength and Wisdom.

At 1st level his HP is 9 (10 from fighter + 8 from cleric/2) + any bonus from a high Constitution. He is proficient in all armor and has 4 weapon proficiency slots and 4 nonweapon proficiency slots. He can only use Bludgeoning weapons. He can choose a fighting style, use second wind once per day, can specialize in a weapon, can cast 1 orison and 1 1st level spell per day, and can turn undead.

To level up, Aelfred has to earn 3,500xp (1,500 for cleric + 2,000 for fighter). At level 2, Larry rolls 1d10 + 1d8, divides the result by 2, and adds any bonus from high Constitution to determine Aelfred’s hit points. He gains an additional 1st level spell and can use action surge once per short or long rest. To reach 3rd level, Aelfred must earn 7,000xp.

Multi-classing

To be multi-classed, the character must have scores of 13 or more in the prime requisites of his first class and scores of 15 or more in the prime requisites of any classes he switches to. The character selects one class to begin his adventuring life. He can advance in this class as many levels as he desires before switching to another class; there is no cut-off point beyond which a character cannot switch. However, he must attain at least 2nd level in his current class before changing to another class. There is no limit to the number of classes a character can acquire, as long as he has the ability scores and wants to make the change. (Certain character classes have alignment restrictions that the character must meet, however.)
