Crater Ridge Mines
When the world was torn apart, it was due to the meddling of the gods among the planes. What seems like a cataclysm to us, lasted unknown eons to the Gods and in their battles and petty squabbles, they indirectly caused the divergence. Outside of the destruction that occurred to the world, it also damaged the fabric between the planes which also disrupted, however slightly, the fabric of magic.
No one noticed at first, the slow leak of magic; but eventually you couldn’t help but notice. It wasn’t until given my total experiences, that I realized these were also being weakened by the Keystones. Remember the Forge of Spells? Every time that was used, it unspun just a small thread from the tapestry of magic.
During the divergence, the gods such a Moradin, tried to keep reality from unraveling. Those gods were able to imprison the evils that threatened the world and contain it and so it went, the damage stopped, for a time. But with the magic slowly eroding, that prison started showing breaks in its own armor. So much so, that the prison broke open momentarily.
The breach was stopped but it almost destroyed this area and created the crater lake inside the mountain. But its failing again, as the magic gets weaker. Whatever was held at bay from escaping has been calling to the followers of those gods and using them as their own. A god’s power comes from the belief in its divinity, not its name, not is teachings, but in its divine nature. Without that belief, a god essentially dies. But the more creatures that worship something, believe in it, the more powerful it can becomes, there are many current Gods that used that truth to become what they are. That faith doesn’t even need to be correct, it just needs to exist.
