The Three Equalizers
As a general rule, an act of magic can normally interact with any material or substance found on Az, seeing as how inanimate material lacks a soul-force and therefore cannot resist any attempt to manipulate it, given that the wielder has the adequate amount of energy to enact such manipulations.
There are, however, three special materials found in minute quantities on the planet which do not follow this convention, each of which, while not inherently possessing a soul per se, are able to alter how magic uniquely interacts with them individually. Due to this fact, these substances are sought after by both common-folk and Exemplars alike, either to utilize their unique properties to further their goals, or destroy them as to prevent their usage by those who would stand to gain great power from them. The names of these three materials are; Vrenidium, Albinidite and Void-steel. Each possesses a different way of altering the flow of soul-force, hence are used for different scenarios and known as the Three Equalizers.
Vrenidium, named from the Vrenidi people (obviously), is a shimmering, yellow metal that feels hot to the touch, even if one attempts to cool it. This is a result of the fact that Vrenidium is highly radioactive, to such an extent that only a few minutes exposure to several kilograms leads to severe cancer and sickness. It is this radiation which is of particular note, as it reacts interestingly with sufficient amounts of soul-force, boosting the effectiveness of one's reserves and empowering the potency of even minor sorcerous endeavors. It is for that reason that this element was jealously hoarded by the Vrenidi matriarch sorceresses, used to bolster their already great abilities. However this power comes at a great cost: not even highly skilled magicians can ward off the negative effects of Vrenidium forever, so as time goes on, they began to suffer terrible cancerous growths and rashes that cannot be healed by magical means, with these developing until the victim perishes. This is one of the main contributing factors that caused the decline of the Vrenidi empire, their magicians of which they relied upon greatly, expiring quicker than they could be replaced. It is for this that Vrenidium has fallen out of use as time progresses, only used by the desperate mage, or more commonly as a potent poison to kill the unsuspecting.
While Vrenidium gives out, Albinidite takes in. This substance, normally a translucent white crystal, experiences an inexplicable change when soul-force is applied to it. Albinidite will absorb the incoming surge of energy, changing from its usual white to any host of colors, depending on the 'color' of the originator's soul, stockpiling the received energy and darkening in hue further when exposed to more energy until it becomes utterly opaque, saturated. This power is not inaccessible by any means, able to be drawn out again by a competent mage and used to add to their reserves in dire situations, or even used by common-folk to give them a short burst of crude mystic might. As Albinidite is the most common of the Three Equalizers and the least dangerous (for mages at any rate), it sees the most conventional use of the three.
Last, but certainly not least, Void-steel has been the focal point of several major conflicts on the Long Stretch throughout time, and its supernatural quality has garnered the ire of most if not all established mages on Az itself. Of course this would be reasonable, as Void-steel is the only naturally occurring material on the planet which has the legendary trait of not being affected by soul-force. At all. In fact, this dark green-grey metal is so utterly grounded by natural laws of physics that injuries inflicted by Void-steel weapons are unable to be magically sealed, arcane barriers are penetrated as if non-existent, and enchanted weaponry is wiped of its unnatural advantages when coming into contact with the material.
For this reason, 'Bane of the Mighty' and 'The greatest Equalizer' are synonymous with Void-steel, for it is the only consistent tool for a common man to challenge those who could be considered living gods, and not only rival them, but in many cases make obsolete. Such to this point that the Grenmen could establish their empire with minimal threat and a strict policy of banning magic in its entirety within their domain. That all being said, Void-ore is exceptionally sparse, only found in regions that experienced meteorite crashes during a bygone period of time.
With this, completes the general overview of these powerful materials and how they impact the dynamic between those with great magic, and those who lack it.
