The Royal Mage

The title of Royal Mage is given to the Mages who attend to the royal household and court of Autara. The title is often passed to one of the protiges of the previous Royal Mage.

Typically there is only one Royal Mage employed at the court with their proteges or apprentices working as their assistants. Not all Royal Mage’s keep an assistant, wanting to be more selective in their apprentices or preferring to work alone.

Upon the retirement of the Royal Mage oftentimes one of their former apprentices will be selected by the Queen to succeed them, often taking into account the Royal Mage’s wishes. If there is no apprentice of the most recent mage, an apprentice from the previous mage will often be chosen instead.

Duties

The Royal Mages have duties regarding the study of magic and they are called upon when their advice is needed. They may also conduct studies and investigations -normally cases related to magic- as part of their duties.

The Assistant Mages are incharge of assisting the Royal Mage as well as keeping their supplies and work areas in order. They often study magic under the Royal Mage while also doing their daily duties.

History

The history of the Royal Mage title is as old as the title of Queen of Autara, with the idea of ruling powers employing Mages being a very ancient one.

The Nimm, Cat, has been around for decades working as an assistant to the Royal Mages. Cat was originally made by a Royal Mage a century or two ago and has worked for their successors ever since.

Currently the position of Royal Mage is held by Ellis Dunberry, who was an apprentice of her predecessor. Ellis has yet to take on a prodigy of her own, so the position of assistant is unfilled.

Uniform & Tools

The distinguishing mark of a Royal Mage of the Autaran court is a red coat or robe with blue trim. The Royal Mage will often wear this when on duty, especially when at court gatherings. The Assistant Mages wear the inverse of this, a blue boat/robe with red trim.

The Royal Mage and their assistants will also often carry tools like notebooks, pens, and useful magic items with them.
