Maidens
Those who serve the Royals
Basic Information
Anatomy
The Maidens are humanoid beings with antlers and flowers growing in a crown around their head. Animal skulls sit mask-like on their face to cover their eyes, and they wear long, transparent veils that reach their ankles. The Maidens' bodies are very human-like and can have any traits a human can, but they identify as a girl. They often appear to be between the ages of 5-90, and never age or grow ill.
Dietary Needs and Habits
The Maidens drink only from the waters of the Greenhouse, where the Queen resides. This keeps them entirely sustained, and it is strongly advised that one does not feed them any other source of sustenance.
Additional Information
Social Structure
The social structure of the Maidens is usually decided by their apparent age. Younger-looking Maidens often clean, while older-looking Maidens often care for the plants. Child-like Maidens assist with plant care and care of insects inside of the Greenhouse. Elder-looking Maidens are in charge of organizing all the other Maidens and keeping things running smoothly. The Queen selects a few special chosen Maidens to stay by her side, and this position is considered the highest among the Maidens.
Average Intelligence
The Maidens don't speak unless spoken to directly, and they do not speak to each other at all. When they do speak, it is vague and a bit poetic with many metaphors and rambling lines. It is believed that their silent, constant communication with the Queen has effected their ability to communicate in a way other beings can comprehend easily.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Despite their eyes being covered, the Maidens can see better than humans without issue, even in pitch darkness or through brilliant light. Their hearing is impeccable, and their reaction time to any sort of situation is near instantaneous. Though they seem very soft and gentle, Maidens are able to lift things over 2,000 lbs. with little difficulty, and can crush metal in their hands. They can hear the call of the Queen no matter how far she is or how softly she says it.
Civilization and Culture
Gender Ideals
All Maidens are girls and women, and take pride in their femininity. Trans and intersex Maidens do exist and are thought of no differently than any other Maiden.
History
Maidens did not appear as the Queen did, and though no one knows where they come from, there are plenty of rumors about them. The most popular is that the Queen creates them from the flowers in The Greenhouse, and when they die they wilt away into dried petals. The Maidens have served the Queen and only the Queen, known to only exist inside the Greenhouse.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Because of their isolated location in the Greenhouse, most species have not directly interacted with the Maidens. Most people view them as they are; servants of the Queen entirely obedient. Some believe they are slaves being kept against their will, others believe they are simply extensions of the Queen herself. Many who do interact with them find them slightly unnerving, as the Maidens rarely speak or make sound.
