The Pylon Network

The pylon network is a series of buildings scattered throughout the Sands, which are built, operated, and maintained by Steamtrain Co. They are built more or less equidistantly, though not perfectly, since they have to be built upon wastebones. Typically, a pylon is nothing more than a tower with a coal vault, supplies for those who work and live there, maintaining the pylon, and a furnace for burning white coal. Pylons only exist to burn white coal, releasing their smoke, which is thickly laden with magic, into the air. This promotes ambient magic which in turn promotes the efficacy of the Rails. This constant pumping of white coal fumes into the air has caused the entire Waste to be blanketed in an endless white smoke cloud. Indeed, a blue sky is a bad omen in the Waste, for it means that the nearby pylon is not functioning properly, and Rail travel is dangerous and inadvisable. This smoke blanket has not been received well by the Lahi'Gaur, who often have to travel through it while storm-seeking, making their job much harder.
