The Monument on Alpha
Nestled into the foothills to the north of the Window Portal on the planet designated Alpha, human explorers discovered an artifact that was definitely made by intelligent design. It is unknown who made the artifact or for what reason.
The object is made of several parts. The base is approximately six feet square and features two steps up to the top. At the center of the base is a plinth about three feet high, topped with a square basin filled with rain water. All pieces of this part of the structure appear to be made of hematite, polished to a high gloss and bearing no tool marks or signs of environmental wear.
Floating about six inches above the basin is a gold ring about three feet in diameter. The ring rotates slowly on an invisible axis in line with the center of the base. Suspended inside the circumference of the ring are three columns of what appear to be an unknown form of writing.
The plinth of the base is orbited by two tiny "comets" leaving a light trail behind them in the shape of an X, like electrons orbiting the nucleus of an atom. These "comets" are charged with energy and provide a deterrent to curious animals that may approach the Monument.
It is theorized that the Monument may be a shrine, memorial or altar of some kind.
Further (unauthorized) examination of the Monument was conducted by Gabriel, who put his hand through the ring, which not only caused the ring to stop turning, but it also disturbed the writing as if they had been inscribed on the surface of a still pond. This contact provided Gabriel with a translation of the writing through direct electromagnetic conduction of his nervous system. The message is: "When the young grow wise, they seek among the missing for that which will make them whole."

Utility
The only known use of the Monument is as a translation device.
Discovery
The Monument was discovered by Col. Beckett Stewart, commander of the X-1 unit that first explored Alpha.
