MD, PhD Rand Wolfgang Engel
Dr. Rand Engel is the premier geneticist at the dei Angeles Enclave in Canada. He is the scientist responsible for cracking the human genome in secret in 1975. Using this research and genetic material taken from the top scientific minds in the world, Engel created the biologically engineered super geniuses now know as the Luminaries. Not all of his experiments were successful, but with each generation of Luminaries born, he refined his design parameters until finally achieving his final goal; however, he did not trust his own work and built in fail-safes that would ensure the Luminaries lived short lives under highly controlled circumstances.
Engel has no emotional attachments to the products of his work. He sees them as tools to further the development of the human race, the next step in human evolution.

Engel was an early graduate due to his intelligence. He finished college in Berlin and attended medical college there. His residency was completed in London. He earned a Ph.D. in genetics and went into research for Mahtoht rather than practice traditional medicine.

He has always worked for Mahtoht, splitting his time between the Berlin facility and Western Canada.
Accomplishments & Achievements
Engel cracked the human genome in 1975 and began experimenting with gene manipulation immediately. The Luminaries are his greatest achievement, as they are the end result of making the human brain more efficient, able to think faster than other humans.
Failures & Embarrassments
The Luminary called Persephone is his greatest failure. While her mental capabilities are off the chart, her design was flawed and resulted in a missing connection in her brain that prevented her from understanding human speech. Engel researched for three years before finding a way to correct this flaw; however, the next generation of Luminary produced from Persephone's twin -- intentionally switched in gender from female to male -- had another unacceptable flaw: the Luminary was homosexual. This presented another embarrassment, as it illustrated Engel's research has, to date, been incapable of producing a "perfect" Luminary.
Mental Trauma
Young Rand experienced extreme prejudice in his youth against German citizens in post-WWII Europe. His parents had been forced to work for the Nazis for a brief period during the war, and he felt the resulting treatment of his family was unjustified since they escaped and began helping the Allies. The prejudice against Nazis still colors his point of view, as he was proud of his parents and feels they were demonized.
Intellectual Characteristics
Engel is a brilliant geneticist, able to understand the interrelated relationships of chromosomes and genomes in DNA. Creating the perfect human being is his life's work. He has little patience with those who are not on his intellectual level. The pursuit of scientific breakthroughs is everything to him.
Morality & Philosophy
He pays little attention to the cost of his mistakes. In his view, any children born with defects must be studied dispassionately and are of no use to him once he understands how the mistake was made and how to correct it in the next iteration.
Taboos
His Aryan roots have strongly incorporated racial purity and homophobia into his psychological makeup. He believes in traditional sex with the female in a subservient position.
