Darien "Hitch" Hitchcock
Air Force 1st Lieutenant (0-2) Darien Hitchcock (a.k.a. "Hitch")
This man was born to be a soldier. Duty and honor are his primary motivators. He is innately patriotic, grandson of a Tuskegee Airman, son of an Air Force Master Sergeant, proud of his military service. After joining the Air Force immediately after high school, he progressed quickly through the ranks due to his stellar commitment and can-do attitude.
He was recommended to a post in the UN Peacekeeping Force (the "Blue Helmets" or "Blue Berets") for a special, top-secret mission in 2018. This was a posting at the international research facility called Techu in Antarctica. He was second in command for the entire facility, though military services were little needed due to the air of cooperation enjoyed by the researchers, all of whom were employed by Mahtoht.
His friends know Hitch as both a dedicated soldier and, when off duty, a fun personality. He never breaks bearing in front of a senior officer, but relaxes somewhat with his peers and the "beakers" at the station. He has a quick wit and is known to be a bit of a drama queen at times.

“We’re doomed!” Hitch declared loudly. “Harper Dax is a disaster magnet, squared! Dude puts his hand on a black hole, people, and now there’s two of ‘em!”
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
Darien keeps in top physical form with fitness and weight training. He participates regularly in self-defense training and marksmanship to keep his skills sharp.
Body Features
Though he has a medium build, his height makes him appear quite large and physically intimidating. He is well muscled, but on the lean side, not bulky.
Facial Features
Big ears, wide-set eyes and big dimples are Darien's most noticeable facial features. He has a high forehead and well-shaped, thin eyebrows over light brown eyes. His nose is aquiline in shape and on the large side. Though facial hair is generally frowned upon by the military, Darien maintains a neat, thin mustache over his generous mouth. His smile is charming, engaging.
Identifying Characteristics
His ears are among the most noticeable features, as they stick out from his head almost like cup handles.
Special abilities
Hitch is a superlative marksman. Not only has he qualified for sniper training (which he declined for personal reasons), but he is exceptionally proficient at shooting while on the move. He also has a fondness for shooting with compound bows.
Apparel & Accessories
When not in uniform, Darien likes loose-fitting clothes like basketball shorts and tank tops, though he has a flair for fashion and looks damn good in a suit.

Mental characteristics
Personal history
Military service is a proud family tradition, and Hitch had no other ambition than to follow in his father's and grandfather's footsteps. He was ranking cadet in the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps during high school in the Wynnefield area of West Philadelphia. During his early service, he was stationed in Ramstein, Germany for four years, during which time he earned his first college degree. Here he became fluent in German and Russian, along with picking up smatterings of other languages. His next posting was in Afghanistan and then Iraq, where he was recommended to the UN Peacekeeping Force. Though this type of posting traditionally serves in war-torn zones, a special crew is maintained at Techu Research Station in Antarctica by agreement with the UN and the international think-tank, Mahtoht.
Darien was initially flabbergasted by the posting, but eventually warmed to the idea of an "easy" posting. His next duty station was New York City, serving as personal bodyguard to Gabriel, once again back under the auspices of the Air Force.

Sexuality
Hitch loves the ladies, and they usually love him right back.
Education
Darien has his high school diploma and a B.S. in Military Science. He is a licensed helicopter and drone pilot.
Employment
During high school, Darien worked in a grocery store as a stock man to help his mother make ends meet after the death of his father. He also participated in regular community service work, such as sorting and delivering supplies for the homeless, carpentry jobs for those in financial need, and serving in soup kitchens.
Accomplishments & Achievements
His time in the AFJROTC helped prepare him for life as a young officer in the military. He rose in rank early due to his exceptional sense of duty and stellar work habits and capabilities.
Failures & Embarrassments
When his younger brother, Ronnie, came out to his family as a gay man, their father, Alton Hitchcock, did not take the news well. He threw his son out of the family home and cut off relations with him at the age of sixteen. Darien did nothing to support his brother, and always regretted that, especially when Ronnie and his husband, DeShawn Atkins, took their mother into their while Darien was stationed overseas when her health began to fail.
His most embarrassing moment was during an attack by alien creatures at the Alpha Command camp, when he accidentally shot Gabriel. Though it was only a minor flesh wound and Gabriel forgave him immediately, Hitch was mortified that he had hurt the man he was supposed to be protecting.

Intellectual Characteristics
He has a sharp wit and a dramatic personality, which he can turn off in the field when he is required to be strictly professional and on task. Darien is an excellent judge of character and has a keen eye for threat assessment. It is difficult to surprise him in the field because of this trait. Though he pretends to be "just a guy from the 'hood", he is quite intelligent and uses his flamboyance to make people underestimate him.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
Hitch believes hard in his country. Though he has struggled with racism in his personal life as well as the military, he is innately proud of his family's military service and aims to continue that tradition.
Likes & Dislikes
Darien doesn't like surprises. He prefers knowing what's ahead, whether that involves the terrain in what may be enemy territory, or that his friends are planning a surprise party for him.
Virtues & Personality perks
Hitch is loyal. He will do anything for those he cares about.
Social
Contacts & Relations
Though he maintains a few friendships with people from his old neighborhood, most are those he has encountered through his military service.

Religious Views
Darien was raised Baptist. He doesn't attend services regularly, but firmly believes in God.
Social Aptitude
Darien is charming, outgoing, usually the center of attention when he's off duty. He's loud and cocky, but most everyone enjoys his antics. Every conversation is punctuated with lively body language and flailing hand gestures. With women he's smoooooth and sexy, slightly romantic but not overtly so. Among fellow soldiers, he's seen as competent and confident, creative under pressure.
Mannerisms
When on duty, he maintains his mask of professional bearing with barely a flicker of emotion, but in a relaxed atmosphere, everything he feels is written on his face and in his body language.
Hobbies & Pets
This man loves dogs. He makes it a point to visit with any K-9 unit on bases where he's stationed, and pay particular attention to the dogs by bringing them treats and volunteering to participate in training exercises (which usually involve being "eaten" by the K-9 soldiers).
Speech
He is LOUD when he's excited. His accent is recognizable West Philly, and slang proliferates his off-duty vocabulary. While he does swear occasionally, he shows considerable restraint with foul language and never uses it on duty.
