The Plummet
They call it "The Plummet". The most tragic event our world faces. It starts off slow at first. One day an island sinks a few feet. Over the next week it picks up speed, falling outward... Some get lucky, if one can call it that; they eventually strike one of the lower isles. That's a cataclysm in itself; but at least we can recover the dead. No, the bad ones miss everything on the way out and disappear into Dorcha's void. We aren't sure what happens to them then. The void is nothing. Material things can not exist there. Do they just disappear? Do they fall endlessly far beyond the sight of this world? I digress...
How's it happen you ask? That's the scary part. See no-body knows... At least no one is talking about it. You see we don't really understand what keeps the isles floating in the first place. Well yes, its magic, sure, but what kind of magic? Who's maintaining it? Why do the isles seam to drift in random directions with no discernable order? If we could understand even one of these things maybe, just maybe, we could determine what causes the plummet.
Manifestation
What causes an island to drop out of the sky is generally unknown within the world of Errota. It is an infrequent event, but not rare. One day an isle is floating along through the sky as normally, the next it has move outward noticeably compared to those around it. It takes time, but each day the fall increases. Within 9-10 days (depending on how high in the sky it started) it will have fallen into the void.
On occasion, a high isle will hit or fall onto a lower isle in the process. This is always a disaster, but if the isle has been falling for more then a day or two, it is catastrophic to both. Luckily, do to the distances between islands, and the chaotic nature of their direction of drift, these collisions are rare.
Localization
There is no set pattern to "The Plummet" events. They can happen anywhere in the world. There is no commonality in altitude, climate, flora or fauna type etc. It is, as far as anyone has discerned, a completely random event. As with most mysteries however, there must be a cause, and it is only a matter of time before someone finds a clue, or a pattern to unlock the mystery of these tragic events.
