Basic Information

Anatomy

Domestic
The typical golum resembles the waste up of a human or elf. Having a narrow waste, and broad shoulders. Typical golums do not have feet but hover through the air. Their heads are typically hunched forward as if under great weight. While this is the expected standard, the final shape is up to the whims of the creator, and many differnt shapes have been formed.
Wild
Wild golums usually form out of stone outcroppings as they are eroded away exposing a shard. Do to the randomness of their formation, wild golums have no standard shape, although size is dictated by the type of shard forming the golums core. The largest (formed from a primal shard) can displace up to 15000 kg (33000 lbs). Most are much smaller.

Genetics and Reproduction

All golums are asexual. They either occur naturally through magical processes, or are crafted by golumancers. They do no reproduce though any form of genetic exchange.

Ecology and Habitats

Wild golums are most commonly found in desert type environments that receive a large amounts of direct light. This seams related to the need for exposed shards to "charge" prior to the golum being created. In areas with more vegetation, erosion happens more slowly so fewer shards are exposed. In wet areas shards are less likely to acquire the amount of light they need either to produce a golum, or to provide for long term survival.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Golums do not eat or drink. Instead they expose their shard(s) to direct light allowing them time to "recharge" their magical energies. Depending on the size of the golum, they type of shard(s) which power it, and how long it has gone without light, this process can take a couple hours, or even days. If they go to long without recharging, golums will cease to function until the shard(s) within it reach a critical charge level again.

Additional Information

Domestication

Domestic golums are created and typically serve their creator.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Golums are heavily reliant upon civilizations that use advanced technology. Fire and Water golums are especially commonplace as they together produce the steam that powers technology. Likewise air golums can aid in shipping and earth golums are a common sight on many farms.

Average Intelligence

Golums are an average intelligence.

Naming Traditions

Golum names are highly dependent on the society in which they live. Most names are simple versions of names otherwise used within that society. Others are often derogatory in nature.

History

The first golums where naturally occurring. Erosion or other factors would reveal a primal shard to the light. That shard would then charge and when the magical energies reached a critical level the rock would become animated and a wild golum was born.   Over time, these wild golums were studied and then duplicated. Today golums are a familiar sight in many places. A golumancer shapes clay and rock into the body and head of the new golum. He then places either a primal shard in the center of the chest, or two greater shards in the outside of each wrist.   Most golums are single element. They often work with additional golums of other elements to power technology. For example, a fire golum and a water golum may work together to generate steam.   Double and even triple element golums are possible, but are inherently unstable and thus rarely used or created. It is also possible for golums to use shard tech of different spheres, however, it is always tainted by the golum's own sphere. For example, a human magi can cast pure air or pure fire. An air golum however, when attempting to cast fire will get lightning. A similar effect is seen when crafting 2 or more sphere golums.
