Spielzeug Schäfer: The Toyshop

The House of Whimsy

There are many anomalies that exist in The Web. Sometimes, it's difficult to classify any of them as bad or good. However, there came an anomaly that surprised even the most optimistic members of The Web. It sailed under the radar for nearly a hundred years before its discovery.

In what is now a ghost town, located somewhere in Northern Germany, rests an unassuming wooden structure surrounded by the abandoned and lifeless husks of houses and shops. It stands tall and firm, as if it were new. The stained-glass windows are bright and vibrant, lit by the glow of light within. The lights are on 24/7, having not once gone out since 1907, the year the building first appeared. The light is far too bright to be a candle or any source of flame, yet there are no signs of electrical power to be found in this unnamed ghost town.

The light paints the surrounding area in hues of red, yellow, and orange, illuminating the sign of the storefront: "Spielzeug Schäfer." According to various stories surrounding this enigmatic shop, the building appeared overnight in a vacant lot as the town was slowly growing. The town was experiencing growing pains, everything from insufficient resources to strange disappearances and horrific scenes of murder led to most giving the town a wide berth.

The Facts?

In truth, this town chose to settle in an area still wild and untamed by mankind. Dark roots run deep here. Stories from the town have been distilled, diluted into popular fairy tales. Monsters of all kinds made their homes here, threatened by the creeping influence of humanity. Every now and again, when night fell they would descend on the small town. Then one day this structure appeared.

A toy shop named Spielzeug Schäfer, toy shepherd. No one could view the shops wares due the fact that there was no door to enter. Parents began receiving packages in ornate, wooden crates. The crates were a little more than a foot wide, long, and high, and they each had a letter addressed to the parents and their child.

Most parents refused to even accept the package, kicking it off to the side or dumping it in the woods nearby. But a few families found their curiosity was far too strong. They pried the crates open with ease, the nails not set right. The nails held the crate tight enough to hold it together but a solid blow could cause the whole crate to fall apart. Inside the crate, on a bed of dry straw, laid a stuffed animal.

Plush

The stuffed animals came in many shapes and sizes. Some were small enough to be held in a toddler's arms whereas others were almost the size of a toddler. The animals that they depicted were found all over the animal kingdom, but the animal depicted was always The favorite of the child addressed in the letter.

The townsfolk were in an uproar. Many of them demanding to be let inside and given an explanation. Some parents were merely curious whereas others were enraged. Rumors began circulating, some good and some bad. Some believe there was a kind and gentle old man who makes toys inside the structure, but due to the fact that he prefers his solitude or perhaps because he is disfigured, he refuses to talk to anyone. Others believe the one inside had an unsavory fascination with children, observing them, and possibly talking to them. How else should they know their favorite animal?

The truth was never revealed, and remains a mystery to this day. What can be said is these rumors and more are wrong. The children of the town became obsessed with their new dolls, at least the ones who were allowed to keep them. Different animals came with different accessories from a wooden bow and arrow to a small wooden sword. Some were dressed like knights in armor While others wore modern vestments, dressed in casual attire, formal wear, or like a soldier armed with a toy musket.

Great quality

The quality that these toys possess have also raised some questions. Many of these stuffed animals were made from the finest materials that money can buy. A teddy bear had fur that was softer than anything the child he was given to ever felt before. The soldiers uniform the teddy bear wore matched the consistency of an actual soldiers uniform.

A lion was given to another child, just as soft as the bear. The full plate armor it wore was made from Damascus steel and accented with fine silk cloth. Whoever the toy-maker was, he must have been wealthy to afford such materials. This goes doubly so when one considers these toys were given away for free.

This is just beautiful. I want one. Takes me back to making up stories about my stuffed animals as a kid.   My first question is, what happens when the child grows up? Does the stuffed animal disappear? do they lose any magical properties they posess and become normal stuffed animals? Do they walk off of their own accord to be gifted to other deserving children? And if any of these are true, can my character keep his anyway?   If I had one, it would probably be a hawk or a salamander. Not exactly cuddly, but them's my favorite. A Bunny might do too. (;   I'm curious if there's a hard limit on the stuffed defender's power. could it, say, fend off an eldritch demigod? That's probably a bit above it's paygrade, right?

So when i wrote this, it was based on a general idea that i wanted present but never really thought about hard enough.   So when a child grows up, any of the things you mention can occur. Usually though, the child keeps it indefinitely. Bears! bears for me all the way... though my son has a cute plush Cthulhu he loves... that could be interesting lol.   as far as the hard limit, yes and no. They can fight, but their real power is how much candlelight they have. They radiate it more, making some feel they are eldritch critters themselves. they likely wouldnt try to take down something that powerful, and focus more on securing the child and escaping. While writing, i loved that i never describe it from the monsters point of view. What could be so scary about a stuffed animal? foooood for thought lol

Well, about that last, if monsters use candlelight to stalk their prey, a candlelight-infused object of any sort might glow to them, and if there's enough of it, it might just be like a second sun. It's like Samwise Gamgee holding up the Light of Erindil to ward off Shelob, only the light walks on it's own and has a sword. To an unintelligent beast that's scary, and there's probably easier prey the next house over. To an intelligent creature of the night, it makes you wary at least.   And also we have no idea what made these things in the first place. They may be conduits for a god's magical power or they could just be markers saying "you eat this kid, and I'll eat you." For all we know they could be the minions of an eldritch horror reserving their souls for himself, and nobody wants to step on those toes.

All are possible >:) lol you also have the potential that they are not what they seem. Both this comment and the one on the university make me wonder if youve read this one. You don't have to read much. That quote may change perspective a bit.   The Magicians of Carthage .

When I click the link it takes me to a 404 page. I can read a bit by hovering over the link though.   Potentially the stuffed animals are psychics with similar powers to Carthage magicians? I was wonering how you make a stuffed bear with a sword simultaneously dangerous to monsters and safe for a child to handle; maybe it's just a blunt wooden sword that gets edged with a psychic scalpel during times of danger.

It does? Woah...... wtf? Hmmm ill take a look see. Not similar powers, but that could be a way of doing it if their actual talent didn't work. The higher the candlelight something has, the more they see. Mostly, they don't have to fight because the creatures see them as they truely are, and its terrigying. The magicians remove their eyes becausd they start to see things... and things start seeing them in return. Dang. No wonder that article isn't popular. No one can get to it.lol
