Coronation Ritual Cup of Dei
History
This ritual was started by Emperor Krelein when he first came to power. He told the people that he had a vision that Dei had put His essence in the wine in a certain cup (The cup of Dei) and that when he drank that wine the god would reincarnate into him. This gave him power of allegiance and obedience and even the worship of the people. It is believed that when an Emperor dies the essence of Dei returns to the cup to be consumed by the next emperor at his coronation ceremony.
Execution
The cup is lifted up for all to see and then the Emperor must drink its contents in one gulp to the applause of his adoring subjects. After this act his word is considered divine and he is obeyed without question.
Components and tools
The cup of Dei is a golden goblet adorned with emeralds and other gemstones. It is kept by the high priest in the palace under armed guard and the wine that is poured into it each coronation day is of an ancient vintage said to have been drank by Emperor Krelein himself.
Participants
The High priest keeps the cup and the wine. During the ceremony he pours the wine into the cup and lifts it up then hands it to the new Emperor. After the ceremony he puts it away again in the palace under armed guard. If the emperor dies he increases the guards because until the next coronation there is a risk that someone else will drink from the cup of Dei and can only be removed as Emperor if he is killed. This is how Krat came to power after killing his predecessor.
Observance
The new Emperor is coronated after the mourning period for the previous Emperor is completed. The first full moon after his death signals the end of mourning and the beginning of the new emperors coronation celebration. Coronations are big events with lots of fanfare.
