These pools, mirror-still and impossibly deep, reflect not just the physical world above but also visions of the past, present, and sometimes the future. To the Bakoto, they are sacred windows into the memory of the swamp, holding the secrets of their land and their people. Looking into an Echo Pool reveals shifting images—moments from history, glimpses of distant places, and occasionally, fractured visions of the future. These reflections often appear cryptic or symbolic, requiring skilled interpretation by the Mistbinders, Bakoto’s spiritual leaders. The pools seem impossibly deep, their bottoms unreachable and their waters dark and silent. Gazing into an Echo Pool for too long is said to invite madness. The visions become increasingly fragmented and alien, overwhelming the mind with conflicting images and emotions. The Bakoto believe this is a warning from the Echo Spirits not to misuse their gift.

The Bakoto believe that each Echo Pool is home to Echo Spirits, powerful and capricious water entities that guard the swamp’s secrets. These spirits are thought to embody the swamp’s memory and will, serving as both protectors and judges of those who approach the pools. The Mistbinders perform a song of attunement, channeling their magic to open the pool’s reflective surface fully. Each participant gazes into the pool, searching for personal truths or collective answers. These rituals are often held during moments of great importance, such as the selection of a leader or the preparation for a significant hunt.

Binding the Mist

A specialized ritual performed by Mistbinders involves calling upon the mist that surrounds the swamp. By communing with the Echo Spirits, the Mistbinders summon or dissipate the shifting fog, using it to conceal their villages, mislead invaders, or reveal hidden paths. Echo Initiations

Young Bakoto undergoing their coming-of-age ceremonies are brought to an Echo Pool. Under the guidance of the Mistbinders, they are asked to gaze into the pool and interpret the visions they see. These visions often reveal their role or destiny within the tribe, shaping their future path as hunters, healers, or even Mistbinders themselves.

The Ritual of Memory

On rare occasions, when a significant elder or Mistbinder passes away, the Bakoto perform the Ritual of Memory. This solemn rite involves lowering a fragment of the deceased’s belongings or a charm representing their essence into the Echo Pool. The Bakoto believe this act merges the individual’s memory with the swamp’s eternal consciousness, ensuring their wisdom and spirit endure.
