Tengu

The Tengu are a unique race of human-like beings distinguished by their sleek black raven wings. They live in peaceful communities within Lindin’s mountains. They live in hidden enclaves, high in the cliffs and in remote areas, where they preserve their ancient traditions and practices. These traditions emphasize discipline, spirituality, and a strong sense of community, fostering a culture that values self-reliance and the wisdom of their ancestors.

History

Once thriving in peaceful, sky-bound communities near the peaks of Astana’s mountains, they lived in harmony with the land, cultivating a culture deeply rooted in spiritual traditions and a reverence for the skies. Tengu warriors defended their land from brigands and beasts alike, their flying swordsmen legendary practitioners of the art of swordplay. Their tranquility was shattered by the devastation wrought by the dragons that ravaged Astana, forcing some of the more fearful Tengu to flee their ancestral homes, whilst others, honorbound or else, stayed resolute to remain in their homes. Seeking safety, those clans who uprooted themself migrated to the Lindin Peninsula, where they hoped to rebuild their lives. However, their arrival was met with mistrust and hostility from the local kingdom, which treated the Tengu unfairly and imposed restrictions on their people. Disillusioned by their treatment and weary from generations of upheaval, the Tengu both in Astana and Lindin, withdrew from broader society, becoming isolationist. Tengu are known for their aloofness and deep mistrust of outsiders, choosing to rely solely on their own kind. While their isolation has allowed them to safeguard their heritage, it has also made them enigmatic and misunderstood by those beyond their communities. For the Tengu, survival and the preservation of their way of life remain paramount, a reflection of their resilience and unwavering commitment to their identity.

Geography

Tengu clans exist mainly within a few key communities hidden away in the high mountains of Lindin's mountain range.

Relations & Society

While many argue about whether Tengu are any different than other Birdkin, they are immensely different, at least culturally. Most existing Birdkin cultures are generally fairly open and friendly to others who share close ties with them, even outside their own kind. Tengu, on the other hand, are very isolationist in ideologues due to perceived ancient slights wrought on them by humankind, both in their ancestral home Astana and their current territory of Lindin. For the Tengu, honor is paramount—losing it is akin to losing one’s life. This belief is rooted in the sacrifice of the Watcher, who gave his life to uphold their honor. To betray this principle is to betray the very foundation of Tengu existence. Tengu society is tightly knit and guided by a strict moral code. Honor and martial tradition define their way of life. Combat ability is highly valued; those unable to fight are seen as unable to bring honor to their people. Service in martial combat is a shared responsibility, and disputes in military, business, or authority are often resolved through trials by combat. Masks are a vital part of Tengu culture. Always red, they signify a Tengu’s role, rank, and purpose. Adolescents receive half-masks, worn daily as a sign of maturity, while full masks are awarded upon becoming full warriors. Full masks are mandatory in battle, serving as symbols of pride, solidarity, and respect, uniting all Tengu, whether active warriors or retired, under their shared code of honor.

Passive Ideas
Sturdy Wings - Your wings are particularly nimble. If you can fly via magic or some other means, you can carry a moderately heavy person about the weight of a typical human without it disabling your ability to take to the sky. However, it might take more effort and stamina to do so.
Lightning Loci - Via some strange mixture of special static neutralizing oils and possibly more supernatural facets, you are much less likely to attract the ire of natural lightning to your body. Even while flying through storm clouds, you are more or less safe from being struck, and whilst swimming through water, the moment lightning strikes it, you are not harmed. This has no effect on magic or electricity from manufactured sources, and intentionally evoking the hazard of lightning striking you negates this boon.
Mockingbird - You are exceptionally skilled at changing the properties of your voice. You can change things like pitch, tone, or other properties of your voice and make various different inhuman sounds. You must be familiar with the sound and have heard examples of it at least a couple of times. (Voice changers or soundboards may be permissible as long as they are used in respect of our server/rp rules.)
