Astanan Flying Fish

A collection of fish species that live in the air instead of underwater. They are native to various areas of Astana as well as the Lindin Penninsula. They have notably longer pectoral fins and other adaptions that allow them to fly. Air fishing is a common pastime as well as serious food industry, and there are multiple techniques. Some falconers train their animals to hunt and retrieve large fish much like hunting dogs. Other nets are crafted specifically to get caught in the stream of air where it can snag groups of flying fish.

Many species feed on plants and other small creatures like insects, whilst some species like the Thunder Barraccuda are notable hunters of other skyfish, and typically species in this category compete with various bird populations.

Astanan Flying Fish have become a staple of the region’s cuisine, prized for their delicate, tasty flavor, which is said to carry a certain unique texture and flavor profile from other fish. The meat is tender, rich in nutrients, and often prepared in ways that honor the age-old traditions of air fishing. Whether grilled over open flames, cured with rare herbs, or served raw in delicate slices, these fish are considered a culinary treasure.
