Anathema, A Place of Nothing
Anathema is a place that once was but could be considered "no more." It is nihility and unmade. For lack of a better description it is empty and no longer full of energy to persist. The dead space called Anathema is a hollow oblivion that comes from the end of time of another place that was once filled with light and life. A Dark Age that was in it's final stages. Whatever source dispenced the energy that fueled that world, it simply ran out, and as it did so, the beings that had been birthed and relied on that energy found themselves slipping ever closer into nothingness.
As the Anathema got closer to ultimate death and slipped closer to nothingness, so too did the beings that lived there, even becoming reliant on cannabalizing their own kind to steal what energies were left, an energy known as Élan. They would eventually even losing the ability to maintain physical forms in a sense. Small flickering lights or souls, drifting about the encroaching dark, trying to keep their lights burning by any means.
Unnamed are these beings born to Anathema, any sort of unifying language was lost long ago. In a realm of eternal nothing, without animal or plant, they learned how to subsist off of the only meager forces that still resided. This mysterious Élan was absorbed in the traces around Anathema that still existed or taken from each other's essence.
Humanoid in appearance, but ranging in their alien visages from eerily human to lizard-like, the beings of Anathema have one or more crystalline-structured horns that serve as their conduit to élan. Physical bodies are a new unknown experience for them, as they have spent their time in a place that lacks the energy necessary to create and feed physical forms.
These Beings have no spells or magic, as their bodies are inherently different and free of the presence of mana. As élan is suppressed in the presence of mana, they are also weak to magic and mana attacks. Learning magic is an immense effort, difficult and rare. But their other, strange and alien abilities typically compensate.
Beings from the Anathema showed into the material plane only after the machinations of an age-old evil tampered with the veil between realms, pulling through the beings by sheer experimentation and accident, but coming to see their arrival as a new line of interest. Like a floodgate, a small crack was opened and never truly closed, causing periodical holes for the beings of Anathema to arrive through, confused but starving, their hunting instincts drawing them to consume both flesh and the emotions of folk in thematerial realm, essences that carry the élan they need.
